I read the article published on Nov. 18 by Dan Chason. I am so glad he did not call himself a “sportsman,” as he only qualifies as a “hunter” because he purchases a hunting license.

Chason was complaining about the Louisiana black bear eating his deer bait. That is exactly what makes me say he does not qualify as a sportsman and even as a hunter. He doesn’t even hunt. He baits a place and waits for the deer to come to him.

Practices like this, if we were talking about doves, would get him arrested, fined and possibly jail time.

He claims to be for conservation, but he says that he prefers feral hogs to black bear. Black bear may “drop two cubs next year.” But a feral hog may drop 12 to 16 piglets this year and next year. These piglets have the potential to drop that many next year and the year after. Feral hogs also represent a danger to humans and wildlife.

I want to see one documented case of a bear in Louisiana attacking a human. And since he doesn‘t like a woodpecker because it disturbs him, what would he offer for that driver ahead of him that disturbs him by driving the speed limit?

I am a sportsman, gun owner, hunter, and conservationist. I don’t feed deer all year long and then say we need to harvest them because there are too many. I don’t bait deer into a place that sits under my warm, comfortable and expensive deer stand that I reach by driving my four-wheeler to it. I don’t use a compound bow that has the killing power of a rifle. I have a recurve bow.

And you don't bait, right? Well, you might consider this "baiting," but before I hunt my prey, I invite them to a forest feast held in their honor. After I have slaved over the cooking all day and am at my lowest point physically and mentally, I want to make sure that the animals are well-fed and energetic, so they'll have the fighting edge!

You use a recurve bow, huh? What a cheater! My bow isn't recurved--that still gives a so-called "hunter" like you a mechanical edge. Heck, my bow is not curved at all! It's just a stick, and I don't even string it. Heck, I don't even throw it! I don't use it at all! The stick's just there in case I ever come across an animal who can pick it up and try to use it against me.

I'm a MAN! Grwww-yrargh! ROOOAAAAR!
