Means "hang loose" in Hawaii. Just a general sign of friendship to strangers. Fits his personality well.

Shaka signal. Hawaiian greeting of friendship and respect that was adopted by the early surf pioneers from cali in the 60s when the first went to surf the Northshore of Oahu.

Yep, that's it. I was stationed in Hawaii for 3 years. The origin of the sign comes from a surfer who lost all digits but the thumb and pinkie from a shark attack. Hang loose.
