Boeing Dream Lifter (large plane) lands at wrong airport, and may be stuck there

Plane needs 9,000+ feet to take off, the airports longest runway is 6,000 feet.

FAIL.

I don't know how the pilots missed the airport in this day of GPS. Even at night ALL towered airports have white and green beacons you can see for miles.
This is just strange. I wonder if they will strip it down like they did for the Taca 737 that landed on a levee in New Orleans in the 80's.

It looks like a snake plane that ate another plane.

When fully loaded it needs 9000+ feet. They will take the cargo off and this plane will take off in a day or two with no problem. Stupid news story.

Didn't this happen to a large military transport plane recently as well?

Yeah, it has wings on it for a 787 in cargo. So I guess they have to unload them, then get oversized trucks to bring them to the right airport.

A huge cluster F***.

I can see in a little single engine cessna with no GPS, how you can miss an airport, but when you are in a big airliner, using set routes and gps it's unexcusable.

You think they would have gone in for a landing, saw that it was a short runway and then powered up and aborted landing.

Even at night you can see how long a runway is.

Can someone link me to the story of the TACA 737 on the levee in NOLA? Never heard that story.

They'll have to empty the contents, and siphon fuel to leave just a little more than enough to get to McConnell. It'll be close but they might be able to lift off in 6,100 ft. I wouldn't want to try it.

Wichita can be tricky because there's lots of airstrips around there.

Lucky no other plane was on the runway.

I'd bet the parts that are in that thing are pretty expensive and pretty big if they had to be flown around... and that plane can't be cheap.

Might be cheapest for Boeing to pay to lengthen the runway, if it's possible at that airport.

The empty take off roll of a 747 is listed at 6,900 feet. A mile is not that long in runway terms.

They are going to have to strip the plane down, then taxi it to the far edge of the runway. Then have the pilots lock the brakes, and then power up all the way and then launch (standard short field takeoff). It is not common to do in such a large plane.

When fully loaded, the Dreamlifter needs a runway 9,199 feet long to take off, CNN said. The Jabara runway is 6,101 feet.

They will simply unload the cargo, and have minimum fuel for the 10 mile flight into the AFB. No problem.
