The NFL created special pink merchandise that was worn in its October games. The color was splashed on its jerseys and other clothing items, in a stated effort of raising money for breast cancer research.

The special NFL accessories and equipment were seen on athletes, coaches and cheerleaders alike, and the special merchandise was available to fans through the league’s online store, individual team websites and at the many NFL stadiums.

Fans were happy to hand over their money to not only wear the number of their favorite athlete, but to also send funding to the American Cancer Society. After all, the NFL claimed that 90 percent of the royalties from its sales went to the ACL.

But not all was as it seemed.

According to Business Insider, The Washington Times and Sports Illustrated, the NFL was actually pocketing most of the proceeds from the pink merchandise. When all was said and done – the manufacturer was paid, the retailer kept half and the ACS administration took its cut – only 8.01 percent of the proceeds even made it to cancer research.

Darren Rovell of ESPN reported that approximately 50 percent of the raised money went to the retailer (i.e. the NFL and its individual teams), right off the bat. The rest was divvied up, until the ACS got a small portion of the overall pot.

Between this and Brandon Marshall being fined for wearing green, I lost the little respect for the league I did have. What a terrible league.

Was your awareness not raised?

NFL talked about this last month and there were articles admitting it.

It's not "Breast Cancer research month" - it's "Breast Cancer awareness month"

Cheap goodwill publicity for the NFL for basically not doing much except going out in pink.

They said their goal is to simply have women get a check up - not donate to find a cure.

That's 8% more than they would have gotten.

Which is great. But they said 90 percent which is far more than 8

That's not true. This is where the distributions went

90% of the earnings that the NFL took in did go to breast cancer. The retailer and manufacturer are not running a charity and are going to take their cut

You do realize that I don't give a shite what ESPN reports. The NFL is not the only retailer that sells those jerseys or towles

If you want to donate to a cause by buying something from one of the major leagues, you're better off donating directly to the cause.

All pink/camo/you name it gear exists to make the league money first.

So if Budwiser came out with pink beer for breast cancer awareness, with a retail of $10/12 pack, do you think they would donate $9 to cancer, or $1?

Nobody is going to take a loss when selling X product where Y percent goes to charity.

Exactly.

Pink in October for NFL is a fricking scam.

Nike Store, Sports Authority, Dicks Sporting all sell licensed merchandise. Those NFLShop.com sites you buy from are operated and retailed by Fanatics Inc. Not the NFL
