He had established no path to the ball; therefore, that part of the rule (e) is being incorrectly cited.
Besides the fact he couldn't do it for being held, the real problem here is that is a PI the other 59 minutes of the game.
The other refs had to remind the ref that flew the flag of this fact. It is really annoying when PI is called completely different on the last play of games than at any other time during the game.

Looked like his momentum had stopped right there.

Lester breaks for the ball before Gronk even tries to change his direction. It just wouldnt have happened. PERIOD.
Completely wrong. If you look at the letters and field goal as a guide, you can see that Lester and Gronk are actually about the same distance from the spot of the catch, BUT Gronk then gets knocked back another 3-5 feet. PLUS, Lester is jumping up about 4-6 inches to make the catch. That is crucial because if it was that high for him it would have been right on the money for the taller but couple yards behind Gronk.

He kept going for x number of yards because he was being held and pushed backwards. The ball was caught in the immediate vicinity of where he was first hit and held as he was trying to break for it.

No they didn't commit Pass Interference. They did commit Defensive Holding. Had Kuechly (sp) just threw his hands up instead of grabbing on to him and holding him away from the play, he would have had the same result and been legal. Obviously it didn't matter though. I have no idea how that isn't defensive holding or how they would pick up that flag.

...because once the QB releases the football, they no longer call defensive holding if committed against the intended receiver.

Dude, no way. No way in hell Gronk gets to that ball first or blows through Lester to catch it. Unless he completely defied the rules of motion.

by the rules and regulations, no they didn't. ball was released before Luke held Gronk, which means it isn't holding. the only call to make was PI, which the refs felt it wasn't

You're simply not factoring in the perspective and timing. You're not looking at where they were at points in time during the play.

Well, I am, but okay.

that doesn't matter if Gronk could have made a play on the ball even if it was very difficult for him to make the catch you still must throw the flag. Only if you feel beyond a reasonable doubt that he couldn't make the catch, any doubt you should throw the flag.

Why am I not surprised that the first a-hole in this thread that clearly doesn't understand pass interference is a fricking Auburn fan?

For anyone still saying "it should at least have been holding":

One of the major questions that has surfaced in the aftermath of Monday night’s much-disputed non-call is whether the officials could have flagged Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly for something other than pass interference.
Plenty of fans and more than a few members of the media have suggested that Kuechly should have been flagged for illegal contact or defensive holding.
According to NFL V.P. of officiating Dean Blandino, penalties other than interference no longer are available once the ball is thrown.

From here on out you'll have the best receivers in the league double teamed. When the ball is thrown, one DB will tackle the receiver, the other DB will get the int. Great strategy now that we all know that it's legal......and I hate the Patriots.

Not a Patriots fan, but that was a penalty. Ball was under thrown for sure, but it was still in the vicinity of the receiver and he was wrapped up and driven backwards while the ball was still in the air, and even if the interception was going to happen anyway, the foul was committed first.
Says LSU vs Auburn

Precedent, it's a real thing.

Because he was being PUSHED back. Look at his feet, dude. Does it look like he intended to continue running towards the back of the endzone? No, his feet are planted and he's coming back for the ball.

No, troll wasn't the right word. Self-righteous argumentative prick is more accurate.
