US Postal Service: $5 Billion loss for the year

LINK

quote:

The U.S. Postal Service says it lost $5 billion over the past 12 months. It's the seventh straight year the agency has reported a net loss.

quote:

The Postal Service has struggled for years with declining mail volume and required payments of $5.6 billion annually in health care costs for future retirees. It has defaulted on three of those payments.

The pre-funding for future retirees is killing the USPS.

I see the day coming that if you wish to receive mail you will start paying a monthly fee to receive such service.

They could easily fix this. I have 3 RURAL post Offices near me ,all within 15 miles or less. Each has 3 or more working in them, some sitting around or standing around talking on cell phones to children[it sounded like],not working. The expense of 2 rural ,low volume Offices could be eliminated. This is true all over the country. One post office is on the edge of town and another about 3 miles down the road where subdivisions have been built. One is enough. One of the offices is open Saturday morning , 1/2 a day. I asked her one morning if she was about ready to go home. She said she didn't care, the union gets them paid for 8 hours for a 4 hour Sat. opening. This is part of the problem too.

i havent looked into their numbers, but I'll assume they carry a very, very bloated pension liability. I doubt they could ever operate in the black without screwing those pensioners over.

I have ZERO problems with subsidizing the US Postal Service.

It needs some updating to allow people to track packages, etc... but I have no idea why so many Americans have such a hard on to kill it.

Beacause that 5 billion could be given as foodstamps to the fat and needy and because it could further educate the youth on the necessity of gay life in America

This This THIS.

UPS, DHL, Fedex, etc do what the postal service does not only better, but cheaper as well and continue to turn a profit.

This should speak volumes about how effective government is at running things.

Similar situation here. If you put my zip code into their website, I have 22 full-fledged post offices within 20 miles. 6 of those within 10 miles.

It isn't much better where I'm about to move to. 6 within 8.5 miles.

yup
but A Want got banned from DU for suggesting they cut Saturday delivery - THATS the kind of lunacy and group think you have over on the deep end of progtard land. mgrath fits right in.

you CANNOT claim to have any common, financial, or economic sense and have "no problem" with the USPS's bottom line.

they haven't yet.....the USPS serves everyone in the nation and military people overseas....UPS and FED EX does not. So to claim that UPS provides the same services that the USPS provides and turns a profit doing so is simply wrong. That is not to say that UPS couldn't do so and turn a profit (I doubt they would do daily rural pick-ups and deliveries and Saturdays would be out of the question not to mention running the number of post offices which are more than simple mail boxes in many communities) but they aren't doing it currently....

I also don't know that UPS and Fed Ex have paid for the infrastructure to deliver mail and packages like the Postal Service has....but then again no self reliant, rugged individual job producer should be expected to pay for the initial construction of the airports and highways that they use in going about their daily business of being rugged, self reliant individual job producers.

The postal system should be privatized just like it has been in commie countries like Germany and France (and as far as I know all of Europe). There is no reason for the postal service to deliver on Saturdays any longer nor any reason to do pickups at all unless there is a charge associated with the service (just like there is with Fed Ex and UPS). Finally there is no need to have so many post offices and the people who actually use the postal service (all of those dammed coupons and sales ads) should be charged what delivery of these items actually cost...just like they would should they use UPS or Fed Ex. Mail delivery is quickly becoming unecessary due to technology and the USPS will have to adapt or go the way of the dinosaurs....

DHKL is the German postal service and is partially owned and financed by the state....DHL is a good example of exactly how socialism works well to deliver goods and services that are difficult to do without a collective effort.....
