On my way to the USGP in Austin I decided to do a taste test of a couple 'legendary' Texas BBQ joints. I was originally going to do LCM/Black's/Kreuz but I was too full to hit up Kreuz. I ordered a half lb of brisket and a link of sausage from each to keep it fair.

LCM

Black's

Both places were good but I have to say that LCM was the definitive winner. The brisket was seasoned better and it had a better smoke flavor. Their sausage was very good while Black's was kinda tasteless. Lastly, both of these places had sauce on the table so I gave them a run. LCM's was more of a lighter mustard style sauce and Black's tasted like Sweet Baby Ray's with some chili powder in it. I like the lighter stuff myself, it really complemented the brisket.

I highly recommend trying this place out. Next year I'll hit up Kreuz and see if it compares.

Haven't made the comparison in several years, but LCM was way tastier than Kreuz on my last tasting visit. Kreuz is in a big, barnlike high-volume place, and the product did not show nearly as much "love" as LCM. When you go into the pit room at Luling City Market, those guys will answer your dumb azz questions, let you look around, and the whole experience was way better than Kreuz's, which seems tailored to tour buses these days.

I would concur with that comparison. When we ate at Black's, the sausage seemed to be nothing but grease. I know you have to have some, but it had so much, we couldn't even finish it. We enjoyed Kreutz also. Have yet to try Smitty's.

you need to go to Franklin's and John Mueller's while in Austin.

Brisket for Franklin and the legendary beef rib at Mueller.

I went to Franklin when I was in Austin last week. That brisket left me speechless. The ribs were pretty freaking good too....

I don't have time to wait in that line at Franklin's this weekend. Practice starts tomorrow at 9 am. I've had the beef rib at Mueller's. It's slamming. Divine. Transcendent.

I'll eventually make it to Franklin's when I don't have an itinerary.

Ate at Kreuz this last spring. I'll never go back. The BBQ was good, but not great. The workers acted like I was an a-hole for showing up. Not worth it at all considering how much greatness is in the vicinity.

ETA: Stopped at Cooper's BBQ in Llano on my way back to Louisiana and had a much more pleasurable experience. The bacon and jalapeño mac and cheese was almost as good as the brisket.
