Civ 5: Strategies for BNW

So after taking a long and grueling 2-month break from this jewel of a game, I'm back in the Civ swing.
I love Brave New World. I thought it was a little unbalanced at times but the recent patch has made it nearly impossible for me to win in certain fashions. Napoleon has been nerfed to hell and Japan is almost too powerful. No oil for the already solid Zero UU AND Samurais can build fishing boats (which adds +1 culture)?! Bushido was balanced somewhat by increasing unit HP but wow...if you can't win with Japan you're doing Civ wrong.
Pre-Patch:
-I liked Alexander. 3 cities...maybe 4.
-REALLY tall capital. 1st 2 or 3 trade routes (or city connections now) came from other cities into the capital with food to get my population up. Higher pop = more workers = more tiles worked/more specialist slots used = profit.
-Coastal City for trade routes and gold. Hill/mountain city for science. If I settle a 4th it is for luxury/production/defensive purposes.
-Go hard on science and ally CS.
Post-Patch:
-Settle 1st city. Spend ~10 turns getting the basics built, sending a scout out, defending against barbarians, etc.
-Turns 15-20: Scout gets ambushed by 2-3 barbarians. Try to flee but dies.
-Turn 20-25: 3 barbarians storm capital. Warrior fights them off but dies. If I have another built he usually dies eventually as well.
-After that, IF I have survived those attacks, the AI settles right next to me. So I go in the other direction...boom they settle again. I'm basically a city state.
Anyone else running into difficulty?

Yep. Got to counter early barbarian rushes and settle a second city all at the same time while AI doesn't seem to have a problem.

It is absurd! I didn't have that problem until the patch. The AI will have 3 cities settled by turns 40-50. Meanwhile I don't have time to even build the units necessary for that.
Scout - Monument - Warrior - Archer - Settler is my usual but lately I've even tried going:
Scout - Warrior - Archer (if discovered, if not then another warrior) - Settler. I STILL don't have enough time.
I tried riding it out last night and it eventually balanced out SOMEWHAT but still tough. I was able to settle a 2nd city but I was way behind in science. The AI was flat broke and had negative happiness from the number of cities. I guess one path would be to found an ideology quickly and try to throw them into unrest? The only problem with that though is getting enough influence to do so...which I can't do with 2 cities.
ETA: It is almost as bad as it was in vanilla with ICS. The ONLY saving grace is they patched in a 25% (I think) science penalty in each satellite city.

I usually go worker - warrior and then use the first culture tree to get a free monument. Saves me some time. Scouts are kind of useless outside of the first few turns to discover ruins, so even if it is only 5 turns they could be put to better use.

I build worker first on larger maps with less civs. I've had to go defense first though to counter the barbarians.
I used to play the Tradition tree and get the monument but I've become fond of playing Liberty. Liberty gives +1 culture in every city...not as good as Tradition (+3 in capital and +2 with monument) BUT I like the production bonuses. With all the damn barbarians I've also started playing Honor some. +33% combat vs. Barbarians. Culture for each killed. With Military Caste you'll get +15% combat for adjacent units and +1 Happiness and +2 Culture for each garrison.
Gotta disagree on scouts. The ruins bonuses are usually solid and occasionally I'll get the weapons upgrade and they'll become ranged units with the scout bonuses/perks. Plus you meet CSs quicker and get the 50 gold bonus rather than 15 which comes in handy AND it helps a ton when planning for my next city. Always like to know my surroundings.

Never played this game, but it looks amazing. I'm sure it eats up a lot of time.

"Just oooonnneeee more turn...." is the unofficial motto of Civ players everywhere. IDK how many times I've said that at 10:00 only to look at the clock 'shortly after' and see 2:00.

I just got into Civ V, but is it virtually impossible to take a city before you get catapults. I just tried to take a city state with 5 archers and 4 spearman and couldn't do it. My archers all fired on the city and didn't do hardly any damage.

yeah it's tough without cata

I haven't played with them since the patch so I'm not sure. I know when the AI plays they aren't NEARLY as dominant as they were, but that's from midgame and on. I don't think I've ever encountered them early.

Rofl the shoshone ability does make for an amazing early game. I need to try them to see how they are affected.

The ability to choose what you want from ruins is stupid great. The extra city border boost is icing on the cake

havent bought BNW yet. no time to play.
G+K was pretty easy. thought it brought a lot of features that should have been in the launch version though. typical nowdays.
what difficulty level do you have it on?
I always drop back 1 level after a major expansion or patch to get a feel for whats new.

Played about 30 minutes of immortal before I realized I was screwed. Went back to king and had some issues but I didn't really play long enough. Prince is the one killing me.

I had to uninstall it. I love the game too much. It's like crack. I just don't have time for it. I'd sit down with the intention of playing for 30 minutes to decompress after work and before I realized it I'd lost my evening. Or I'd take care of things first and start to play and before I knew it midnight would be there. It's an awful game for that reason only. It's like a compulsion.
FWIW, the only game I ever completed/won was with Japan. I typically get bored around the modern era and want to try a new faction.

I just installed BNW because of this thread and I like it so far. I am really pissed about the French UA change, so now I need a new main civ.
