Brought Little Fishhead out with me Saturday to Hopedale. Realizing it was opening duck day, decided to get there about 8am to let the chaos settle down. Had to park down the road behind the 'F' sheds after launching.
Went to a spot I know holds some kid sized reds, as little FH really wanted to catch a redfish. Had live shrimp under a cork, but it wasn't happening. We moved around a point to get out of the wind and the water was gorgeous. I started fishing myself and caught three 20" class reds in a hurry, and tied on an artificial so he could just cast and retrieve. (Black Spoon, or as I like to call it...the Black Spoon of Death). Came to a good looking shoreline and told him to cast it straight down the shoreline and reel SLOW. He half listened, made a great cast, but I had to remind him about the S L O W part. I turned around to grab my rod and he says "I GOT ONE!!". I tell him to set the hook and he does so in tuna fisherman fashion lol. He fought it and cranked and reeled, and although I've caught a redfish or a thousand in my life, this was by far the most enjoyable I've ever netted.

A shade over 28" and close to 9 lbs, his best redfish ever by far. We also caught a bunch of specks, although most were small. We kept his redfish of course, along with the smaller ones I caught. I wound up catching one about 30" and a shade over 10 lbs, let him go. Caught several sheepshead, which of course he made me keep.

Great day on the water with Little FH.

I never understand why people dont keep sheepshead. Makes no sense to me. Its a great tasting fish. Is it just laziness in cleaning the fish? BTW awesome report. I cant wait to take my son out fishing one day when he gets old enough.

awesome trip bro. hem ids love the redfish don't they?

I hate sheepsheads. Way to little fish for the size plus they are usually full of the foulest smelling green goo when you clean em. Plus the rib cage section is a m-effer to cut through.

The black spoon is a Johnson Silver Minnow in "black"...really more of a platinum color. It's very weedless, unless you get into snot grass. My brother and I fished redfish tourneys and it was our favorite bait. I've more or less switched to preferring spinner baits, but I still use the black spoons a lot in certain situations, such as clear water over oyster bottoms. It's simple enough to use for kids, because it's simply cast and retrieve, slowly. It wobbles and IMO resembles a crab to the redfish, since they have a tendency to bring it straight back to the crushers if you're not quick enough with the hookset. I like em better than gold in shallow water on sunny days, because I find the gold is sometimes TOO flashy.
Once you go black, you never go back.

Nemire makes one that holds a similar “death" moniker and is truly black. It however, is not as easily found in stores as the Jonhson

I do not care for the Nemire spoons.
