Mett should pass every time he does this. Currently when he slaps his hip we run and get stuffed. If a fan can notice this, certainly defenses can too. Why is this done?

Maybe it means absolutely nothing. Have you gone back and watched every single instance of his slapping his hip?

Yes I have gone back and watched every one of them. So far it has happened 41 times this year and all but 1 were runs.

The QB typically has the option to reverse a called run to the opposite side depending on what look the D is giving.

The QB will usually give a verbal call that will tell the O-line that the blocking scheme has flipped, and then a visual que for the RB since he will not typically be able to hear the QB in a game-time situation.

Usually when this kind of call is made, the offense will have an advantage running to the side the QB has checked to. That means the key is getting the ball snapped relatively quickly after making the switch. That way even if the defensive players register and recognize the call, they dont have time to adjust their alignments.

ETA: IF you notice a defense adjusting every time you make the call, then you have a way to dictate to the Defense how they will align. You can make the call on any given play in order to have the defense align to the side you want them on. Which is why you wont typically see a defense completely shift their defensive play call just because of the QBs signal.

I have noticed it as well. Don't get why we call out something so obvious.

Well if I can see it sitting on my couch from home, along with every fan in the stadium can notice it as well. The defense HAS to be able to recognize this as well as their coaches upstairs. I'm sure there is a better way to communicate this. This gives the defense a huge advantage on plays that this happens on.

See my previous post. The defense cant sell out based just on a hip slap. It would leave themselves open to being manipulated by a QB making fake calls.

Also, the call to switch a run play from one side to the other is typically done to give the offense an advantage. And since the defense doesnt change formation based on the hip slap, if you get the ball snapped quickly you still have the numerical advantage to the side the play was checked to.

No it doesn't. For all the reasons I've listed.

Defense CANNOT change their call based on the hip slap. Once they start doing that, then the QB can dictate to the defense, because the QB and OC will see that every time they switch the run play, the defense stacks to the side the QB signaled. Since they dont change defensive formation, the numerical advantage the offense gains by checking the run to the opposite side still exists even IF the defensive players recognize the call.

Having that numerical advantage is preferable to running into the stacked side of the line of scrimmage. Even if the guys on the left side know its coming at them, we've got more blockers than they have defenders on that side.

This 100% helps the defense! It's basically letting the defense know what we are going to run. Of the 40 runs that this has happened on, our backs have gained over 3 yards a total of 4 times. Go back and watch the film for yourself. Why do this? It gives the defense an obvious advantage as evident by not my opinion but the facts of what has happened this year.

It's probably easier for us to recognize from our couch than it is for them with the offensive line obstructing their view.

Sorry I only skimmed through the thread, but every QB has done this at some point or another during a game. Means multiple things. Can mean which way to run, which side he wants the RB to set up a pass block, what side the blitz is coming from, what technique the Noseguard/DT are lined up in. As one poster has mentioned, Defenses can't adjust to that because they have no idea what exactly they are telling the RB/FB.

He's just trying to see if his arse is still intact after the latest OL failure to stop the rush.

My son does the hip slap in YFL also. I know he's not going to audible out of a play but it's still funny. Reminds me of Mett.

it's amazing how little people know about football after reading just a few posts in this thread.
