My dad, Pops Midnight, passed away on Memorial Day this year. There was nothing left on the airframe that was good, and he had developed dementia (likely Alzheimers in late 2010 or early 2011.) He suffered a bad fall at the nursing home, developed an infection, his kidneys shut down, and that was pretty much it. He did not linger very long.
So, this is our first season without him. The only things he really cared about, at least after mom passed away (and she did so young, at 44), were his 2 children, 4 grandchildren and LSU football.
He hated Alabama with a burning passion typically reserved for the Old World - a deep-seated hate, that was also tinged with respect, particularly for Bear Bryant. He used to say, "LSU has to be 10 times as good as Bama to beat them by 3 points." That actually held true in 2010 (in a game on his birthday) and 2011 (held on the day before his birthday), but his memory was starting to go, so he was unable to truly enjoy those last 2 wins against the Tide.
Looking forward to this Saturday (another LSU-Alabama game within a week of Pops' birthday, which happened approximately 45 times while he was alive, and actually on his birthday 7 times), this will be the first LSU-Bama game in several years that Pops will be able to watch and enjoy.
...around the bowl and down the hole.

Sorry to hear about your pops. Sounds like he has his faculties now and will be watching the game. Hopefully he'll be able to give Bear Bryant some of the business when we're whooping them Saturday. All the best man!

He is now our "Ace" in the hole. I am sure he will be ready to cheer from up above. Sorry for the loss

Thanks for sharing.
If he survived 45 b-day/LSU-BAMA weeks, 74 was a good run!!!
What a foreign notion compared to todays standard.

Thanks to everyone for responding. We've been laughing and joking about the old man for most of the day.
My G-d he loved LSU football, though.

Sorry for your loss Ace. Pops sounds like he was an awesome dude!!
I feel a bit of a kinship. Today would've been my brother's 50th birthday. Now he passed away a long time ago. When he was 11 and I was 8. But born on November 6th he was; 1963.
My most vivid memory of him and LSU is that my dad had two tickets for the Ole Miss game in 1972, so we drew straws. I had the short one so he got to go. Wish he could have kept going to see the Tigers for decades more.

During the prep for that game, I was allowed/encouraged to curse for the very first time:
"Geaux to Hell, Ole Miss, Geaux to Hell!"
(I was 5.)

Great post. Would have loved to have met your dad and shook his hand.
Will be a tough test to beat Bama this year but it will make the victory that much sweeter.
