The Wolverine Sequel is in the Works AND Apparently Deadpool Could Follow Suit

Hugh Jackman better shine up his claws: A new “Wolverine” film is in the works, with James Mangold in negotiations to write the treatment.

No storyline details were released for the 20th Century Fox film, which Lauren Shuler Donner will produce.

The sequel, which will be the third solo Wolverine film, may have seemed like a given since Mangold’s “The Wolverine” was the second-highest grossing “X-Men” film. So far it has earned $413 million worldwide, $132.36 million domestic and $280.73 million internationally.

The fast-healing mutant will rejoin his “X Men” teammates in next summer’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” which brings director Bryan Singer back to the franchise.

Mangold’s other writing credits include “Cop Land” and “Walk the Line.” He directed both films, as well as “The Wolverine.”

However, after an extended push-back from the studio, the director and actor have spoken up about their clinging hopes for bringing it to fruition.

Talking to ClevverMovies recently (via Dark Horizons), Miller revealed that “Zombieland” screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have turned in a new draft of “Deadpool” to Fox, and now they're just waiting on the studio to acknowledge its possibilities. “ 'Deadpool' is still alive, and we're just waiting for the studio to embrace what an amazingly fricking awesome film this would be,” he said. “Ryan is ready, I am ready, the fans are more than ready, we just need that elusive green light.”

“The script is probably available online, it leaked,” he said. “But it's very meta, I mean the character knows he's in a movie, he knows he's in a comic book. He names studio executives in the script. So, it's kind of a risky property. But, you know, we'll see.”
