Excellent movie, hanks acted his arse off

The raw emotion in the final scene when we was getting checked by the medic was incredible.

Question: why the hell don't those boats have guns??

Saw it today also. Very good but I feel like the previews showed way too much. Totally agree about Hanks' acting in the final scene, it was awesome.

Good movie, just too long for a story that didn't have to be

If the crew carried guns, the would have to be trained to use them and that isn't cheap.

Like $200? Take it out of their pay and require it as job training. That's an easy problem to get around.

Saw today too.. I laughed inappropriately when he yelled what just happened when the other 3 were shot at same time. Really awesome marksmanship.

Probably thought "The Passion of Christ" and "Titanic" gave too much away in the previews as well.

There's a Netflix special on the true story with authentic footage. The marksmanship is incredible!

Just saw captain Phillips (SPOILER)
Regarding guns, it's also liability issues. Some of the guys who work out there are not just ordinary citizens. I have often wondered if a few guys I worked with had done jail time in the past. You could have a situation where a crewmember acquires the gun and uses it on his boss or goes on a rampage. I have seen blowups before with wrenches drawn, I have heard from oldtimer stories of axes being used or drawn. One captain i worked with told me that after a reprimand of a crewmember, the next day someone had placed a bullet on his desk. Also a simple misuse of the gun during training or inspection could happen. In the end the lawyers will seek to make the company responsible.

I know of one guy who was assaulted in port, but showed up to the ship drunk. He was fired for being drunk and sent back to the USA. He gets back and goes to the hospital to prove he needed medical help and was not helped by the captain/agent. The guy wound up getting a multi million dollar settlement.
Just imagine if the crewmember was killed due to another crewmembers misuse of a gun.

It's easier to pay for a third party escort while transiting dangerous waters than have to pay to train marksmanship to people whom you don't trust with a gun in the first place.

If you make your vessel look secure and a pain in the arse to board, the pirates will more than likely move on. We implement and improve security measures and procedures often.

Not sure if true, but I heard that a ship cannot travel thru the Suez Canal (sp?) in Egypt if you have guns.

does it make CP out to be a huge hero? read about the controversy between the crew's account and the movie's portrayal. Seems to be some rustled jimmies on the crew.
