So, every so often, you get a guy in the league who seems to play pretty decent when given the chance. However, he keeps getting passed over for the next new thing.

I feel Rich Gannon fits this mold. As a career backup, he did pretty well every time I saw him come in on the Chiefs, and then he finally got his shot.

Jason Campbell didn't light the world on fire by any means, but he had some good years late with the Redskins, then was doing well with the Raiders (THE RAIDERS!) until he got hurt.

This past week, he throws for 300 and 2 TDs for the Browns. He was their THIRD option at the position.

Let's discuss this phenomenon, or not? Why does it happen? Is there a default "narrative" for certain QBs or did he (and others) do something negatively on a personal level to get such treatment.

He is only 31 years old BTW.

Teams know that he's not the guy to take them to the next level. He's a nice stand in, but he's not the guy to build a team around.

I like him, FWIW. He should have a starting job over the likes of Gabbert, Palmer, etc.

Matt Flynn had one (or two) good games.

This guy has had many more than that but sits behind inferior talent routinely it appears.

Right, he doesn't even get the "stand in" consideration you'd think he'd get over some really awful QBs.

Good selection as well. He was capable of putting up some monsters numbers and then told he sucked the day after.

i guess it's because they know what he is. they wanna try and strike gold on an unknown or some shite rather than have below average jason campbell be their long term starter.

roster decisions and shite in sports have a lot of flaws. this keeps becoming more and more obvious as the years and statistical analysis growth continue.

My only conclusion I can draw that its this coupled with a preference to either boom or bust. If you boom you boom, if you bust, at least you get sweet draft picks.

If Campbell gets you 8-10 wins, you get a shite pick and an entrenched starter with some fan support and a contract that would be difficult to jettison for rebuilding purposes.

Dude was also in like 5 different (at least) offensive systems.

I think he was 3 for 3 his first three NFL seasons and 2 for 2 his last two years in college learning a new system. Something absurd like that.

I definitely believe that certain players are "ruined" by their organization they get drafted into.

Who are the QBs teams have chosen over Campbell? I can't think of them off the top of my head (that alone let's you know it's not a stellar list).

Campbell was the starter in Washington for the better part of 3 seasons, also got a long look in Oakland.

He's had plenty of opportunity. He's a good 2nd string QB, plays well in relief but over the long hall he's Don Strock.

You youngsters can look him up.

I guess you could say:

Buffalo before EJ
Kansas City for a number of years
Oakland of course
Who QBed Washington after him before RGIII? Rex Grossman?
I might throw in the Vikings. Ponderer was a reach
Arizona obviously
Seattle before Russel wilson
Cleveland of course

I think that is a pretty accurate list of teams that could have had him when he was available/before they put a down payment on a hopeful QB candidate.

Because Jason Campbell is about as mediocre as you can get. Teams would rather tank and have a chance at drafting a franchise QB high than consistently go 7-9 or 8-8 and end up with a crappy pick.

Its better to be young and suck with good measurables than to actually perform decently at all. You end up in the nether region that is Campbell's existence.
