The Onion or MSM; The AP describes the Effects of The Shutdown

I'm just grateful to The Dear Leader that all you Politards made it out alive. We were maybe one step ahead of Zombie Apocalypse. Oh the humanity!

quote:

Our food was a little less safe, our workplaces a little more dangerous. The risk of getting sick was a bit higher, our kids' homework tougher to complete.

quote:

The "feds" always are there in the background, setting the standards by which we live, providing funds to research cures for our kids' illnesses, watching over our food supply and work environment.

quote:

At a warehouse, factory or other worksite, a young minority exposed to racial slurs by his boss had one fewer place to turn for help.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission was not issuing right-to-sue letters, so people could not take discrimination cases into federal court,

It infuriates and sickens me that people think like that.

What we ever do without our beloved benevolent paternal State, from which all great things come?

Yes, it's been my experience that supervisors just LOVE to turn untrained teenagers loose with heavy equipment.

I so miss the days when we used to laugh at state-controlled media around the world. I never thought I'd see the day when ours would voluntarily subvert.

Maybe a few less people got a letter from the IRS, OSHA hassled a few less contractors, and the EPA issued a few less regulations which cost us millions indirectly.

Hopefully we didn't lose any snail darters, the levees in La. held and no hurricanes snuck up on us either.

Those quotes make me sad for this country (but more so the media in particular).

What's amazing to me is that I (and I would hope most sensible people) said "wow 17% of Fedgov shutdown and we made it just fine. Seems like we can trim the fat"

Same here.

The only instance I had with the shutdown was trying to fill out a U.S. Census survey, which said I had to "by law." I went to the website, which of course was shut down. That's it. Otherwise, I never noticed, thank God.

That survey was damn scary, too. I can't believe the personal stuff they asked. Finally I had to answer one question with "none of your g**d**m business!"

This is my favorite from the article which actually highlights why we should actually have less government.

quote:

Monique Howard's 5-year-old son, Carter, has the most trouble with his asthma at night, when his breathing is labored. Her family dreams of a cure, the kind doctors are hunting through federally funded research grants at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.

During the shutdown, the doctors had to stop submitting grant applications to study childhood asthma and other diseases and disorders. Hospital officials said the shutdown could have delayed funding for nearly half a year.

How in the hell does a 17 day shutdown cause funding to be delayed for half a year? Can you imagine telling your boss since you were sick for three days that work you intended to finish for him next week will not be ready for another 2 months?

Sadly we'll never be able to convince those who think that way otherwise. It's ingrained in them. One of these days it'll get so bad that we'll have to either join them in their worship of the government or line them up and shoot them.

Are you not familiar with the speed and efficiency at which our government operates?

On the other hand, though, the slight delay in some scientific endeavors could be troublesome, considering the delicate measures and constant attention that some studies/experiments require. I'm not advocating their existence (at least on the public dole), but that is the reality of things.

This isn't about the research of the mating habits of the quail but funding for it. They just need to decide to fund and cut a check if they do.

I realize this - I was just making a side-point about some of the federally funded research that goes on.

As far as the timeliness of the funding, I don't expect much else from the government. They have no incentive to act in a timely or cost-efficient manner, so the delay of grant-checks is unsurprising.

re: The Onion or MSM; The AP describes the Effects of The Shutdown

quote:

Did anyone besides me wonder how they got all those signs printed and distributed far and wide, including to all the national parks and cemeteries overseas only eight to ten hours after the government shut down? Take a look at this from someone who wanted to remain anonymous.

I have worked in the government once. During that time I became quite familiar with requisitions, bidding, awarding contracts etc. It is a time consuming process with bean-counters and pencil-necked bureaucrats every step of the way. The simplest request takes months not days or hours.

In less than 8 hours of the shutdown, miraculously, professionally printed 3X4 foot signs appeared all over the country in the tens of thousands saying this park, facility, etc. with custom logos closed due to government shutdown. There has not been a government shutdown in 17 years. These signs were designed, specifications were determined, signs were then requisitioned, bids were posted and vetted, and government contracts were awarded. The materials were then ordered and the signs manufactured then distributed U.S. Mails or freight companies.

This shutdown was orchestrated and planned well in advance at least 6-8 months ago. Millions of tax dollars were appropriated and spent in this process.

I found this comment interesting.

re: The Onion or MSM; The AP describes the Effects of The Shutdown

I need to delve further on the homework angle.

I was either 8th grade or a freshmen in HS during the last shut down.

I'm wondering how that affected my homework.

I'm also wondering how I didn't think of telling my teacher and mom that the shut down fricked me and my homework.

You live and learn I guess.
