When is it a penalty for an O-lineman or blocker to push or aid the player with the ball to gain additional yardage? Watching the LSU game I noticed Blue(I think) aid(push in the back) Jennings on his TD rush. Just curious what the rules were for that.

TIA.

IIRC it is no longer a penalty with this season.

It was previously but rarely ever called. LSU is the only team I have ever seen penalized for that and it was 4-5 years ago?

"The Bush Push"

Don't believe it is a penalty anymore.

I think they did away with that penalty after that play, and it wasn't even called then.

I think I do remember that. I also remember LSU getting called for leaping against Auburn years ago.

No foul for pushing; however, grabbing the runner and pulling or lifting him *IS* a foul

I believe it's Rule 9-3-2

Forgot to add the penalty portion if it is a foul: 5 yds

Glad I could help. In 16 years I've seen it called exactly once. It's one of those fouls that has to be blatant before anyone throws a flag.

"Leverage" - it was a penalty to land on a teammate while leaping to block a kick. The only time it was ever called against LSU in 2004. It was only a penalty for a year.

With all the BS player protection violence reduction in college FB, it surprising they changed the rule. I can tell ya from experience that having a player behind the play come running full speed and put his helmet or shoulder pad in your back when you are stood up in a pile hurts like hell and can do some real damage.

Back in the early 1900s, some O-linemen had straps sewn to the back of their jerseys for the runner to grab on to.

Not sure where you get your information, but Leaping (9-2-11) is still a foul. It used to be restricted to landing on an opponent, but was changed several years ago to include ANY player.
