Spending A Week in Lake Charles
Posted on 10/6/13 at 9:21 pm
Posted on 10/6/13 at 9:21 pm
I will be spending this whole week in Lake Charles and would like someone familiar with the area to suggest some good places to eat and drink. Good bars and fun things to do are also appreciated.
Thanks in advance for any good suggestions and/or smartass remarks.

When does your stay start/end? I'll give you a rundown tomorrow.

Darrell's...get "The Special" with jalapeno mayo. If your table isn't piled high with the small napkins they provide then you have not enjoyed this sandwich as God intended.

Prayers sent. And I was born and raised here.
I agree with the other posters, get something from Darrell's on College.
Steamboat Bill's is good but pricey for what you get.
Try Ball's Fried Chicken as well.
Go to L'Auberge, I guess.
Hong Kong has good Chinese food.
Enjoy our lovely roads.

Case manana blows, except for the salsa.
Hackett's has great boudin and plate lunches.
Ball's fried chicken will make you forget about Popeyes. They have good red beans and fried fish as well.
If you want a good dinner one night then Mazen's is the place to go.
Darrell's for a Darrell's Special with the jalapeño mayo.
Steamboat Bill's House potato(topped with etouffee and fried shrimp). They also have a surprisingly good chicken and sausage gumbo.
Southern Spice on Ryan St. is a good quick lunch spot. Good burgers and homemade potato chips.
El Tapitio is the best Mexican food in town, but if you don't mind a short drive then Ruth's in Sulphur is even better.
Luna downtown has some great tuna dishes.
OB's bar & grill has a solid happy hour and decent bar food. Fried pickles and jalapeño peppers go great with a few cold beers.
Micci's piano bar has live music a few nights a week and is probably my favorite bar to stop in for a few drinks.
Lake Charles can be a pretty boring place at first glance, but there is some good stuff here if you dig a little.

I've yet to eat at Steamboat Bill's since it gives the impression of being a touristy sort of place being right off the interstate with a cartoon crawfish on its sign. I've heard nothing but good things from folks here, so I may need to give it a go.

That's the second one. There's one in town that I prefer to go to. On the corner of Broad (hwy 90) and Hwy 14. Doesn't have all the crazy signs like the one by the lake.
Their gumbo is legit, I must say. Go to that one. It's a little more spacious than the other one. It's not fancy but there's more room.
Try the crawfish pistollettes too.

That second one is a lot better, at least to me. That's the original one, I think.
My family is here in town. I lived in Orlando, Fl for 11 years, moved back here a couple years ago.
Just wanted to be closer to my parents, my niece and nephew, that kind of thing.
