It is really convoluted, but let me try to clarify some stuff.

Heroes have a new aspect to level up called inscriptions. Each level of inscription boosts HP and ATK (I think these carry over to all game modes, still trying to clarify here). At inscription level 21, the hero's 4 crest slots unlock for level 1 crests. You have to level up inscription further in order to put higher level crests on that hero. The crest levels correspond to the different talent levels we are used to (1/5 through 5/5).

The 4 crest slots are numbered I - IV, and you can only put a II crest on the II slot, etc. I think IV crests are rare.

Putting crests on a hero boosts his stats further, even if the crests don't match. If you can manage to acquire crests I-IV of the same talent, putting them all on the same hero gives that hero a second talent, and the talent level will be the lowest level of the crests you used. For example, if crests I-III are all level 5, and crest IV is level 2, the talent will be level 2/5.

You can combine several duplicate crests (same roman numeral AND same level) to create one higher level crest. For example, you can combine 4 level 1 number I crests to make 1 level 2 number I crest. Yeah, it's going to take a shitload of crests in order to create a level 5 crest, and you have to do it for each number I through IV.
