Please tell me what Rob Ryan is doing right.

Knock on wood, but the performance by the defense has been drastic. The fact that we were on the dead bottom of the league last year there was no way I could conceive that the defense would be so far along and playing so well. I really thought this was going to be a 2 to 3 year process to get the defense playing at a top 10 level.
I mean, a few personnel changes, scheme change from 4-3 to 3-4 (albeit it appears they still play a lot of 4-3 sets), and of course the hire of Rob Ryan. We are not seeing our LB's and safeties getting isolated and burned this year. Jenkins seems to always be in position this year, a la 2009 with Sharper. And of course the biggest surprise is the play of the DL. Maybe the DL is where Rob Ryan is having the most influence and with great DL play that really makes it easier on the next two levels.
I'm loving it and to think I was a little skeptical of the Rob Ryan hire. I know it's a long season and a little premature to get really excited, but I like the direction our defense is heading.
With that said, why is Ryan having success whereas Spags and even GW's defenses could play up to this level?

Last night was the first time I could clearly see a change at free safety.
It looked like Bush at FS and Vacarro at SS on most plays.
Anyone else see it that way?
If it stays this way Christmas has indeed come early for me this year!!!
There are many answers to your question but I think thats one.

It looked like Vacarro and Jenkins were playing a lot of man coverage and Bush was roaming and making tackles in the box.

He's not forcing his players into something their uncomfortable with. If you notice, when a new player comes in, he changes defensive alignment almost every time.
At one point last night we were in a 34 nickel front with Wilson and Haraslon at the DE spots. Sometimes we'd be lined up in a traditional 4 man front with Jordan and Galette as the DEs. Sometimes well play with 3 safeties and I find most of the time were sticking with only 2 true LBrs in Lofton and Hawthorne

Sounds like he is recognizing offenses like Payton recognizes defenses and gets his guys in the right position pre snap. I may never completely understand it, but I'm certainly enjoying it.

-He saw his linemen could win one on one matchups, and he's just let them have at it.
-It seems like he's stressed sound tackling and alignment, which has limited leaky yardage.
-Not having to rely on blitzing to generate pressure, he's been able to drop more into coverage, which has led to more sacks and int.
-We heard so much about what Ryan's defense was, but this is really what he did, and is THE main reason why we're having success: he built a defense around the players he has.

Go ask Jordon, Jenkins, Hicks, Walker, Foster, Galette and Wilson.

I think that key is that you have to physically threaten the players with loaded pistols.
Stick a gun in a CBs face and tell him, "next time you suck will be your last", and you get improvement.
That's Rob Ryan's secret . . . that and buying drinks for everyone at Mae's after the games.

Sean Payton is the answer. Some changes have been made but no way D would have been that bad last year with SP on sideline.

He put a bounty on mediocrity.

1st and foremost he is playing a bunch of hungry and motivated young guys and not a bunch of fat old overpaid players that have lost the want

Well, I think he sees the weakness and adjusts. A lot of coaches would rather force a scheme and tries to get players to do things that they just can't do.
