Anyone have a source for a whole 15-20 lbs. pig in the BR area? So far, I've found two places in town. At Scallan's, the price is right at $2.69 lb., but the smallest available is 30 lbs. Chris's Specialty Meats can get the size I need, but the price is $5.99/lb. Kartchner's in Krotz Springs sells them, but it's a two hour round trip. If I have to, I'll buy from Chris's, but I'd like a cheaper option.

Go to the Food and Drink Board. You'll get help.

Have you tried searching for this info? It was discussed quite a bit early in football season.

Why not just get the 30 from scallions?

$5.99 is ridiculous. But Chris's is ridiculous in general.

Call Roucher's. 15-20 is a pretty small pig but they can probably hook it up.

Try maxwell's. I live in Shreveport, but used to live in BR. Last year I got one from Maxwell's in Shreve, and the previous 2 years I got them from Scallan's in BR. Roucher's always needed more heads up than I could give, but theirs will be a better pig (fresh vs frozen).

Chances are plenty of places around town could order one if you wanted one, even if they don't stock it regularly. I have been told that most of the pigs in S.LA come from some farm in Pontchatoula and are frozen and sold to the meat markets.

30 lbs is too big for my outdoor oven. I called Roucher's. Their smallest is 30 lbs. Price was 2.49/lb.

Even with the head and legs cut off?

You can try Decuir's in Port Allan but when I went down this road a few weeks ago Roucher's was the best deal as they are fresh. A pig can take 2-3 days to defrost.

When are you cooking and for how many? I'll see if I can find it but look for my thread about it a few weeks ago. Apparently one of the restaurants in town will sell you sucklings. Maybe you could do a few of those?

For your needs just call Roucher's. Same price as Scallan's and it's fresh...like they kill it when you call fresh. And have them season it.

Smallest pig they had and typically have (based on talking to them) is 35-40 lbs. but if I remember correctly you will need one at least that big anyway.

No idea. 10lbs will be plenty for Cuban sandwiches. I'll only be cooking for a few neighbors. Plan to grill oysters and will have other food too.

Fresh Market on Perkins quoted me $2.99 lb for a 15-20 lbs pig. Sounds like a winner. Said they can order up to about 50 lbs. it needs to be ordered a few days in advance.
