The Saints front office and UDFA's

I know this has been discussed often on this board, but I was looking at the Saints roster and counting the number of UDFA's just from this year.

RB- Khiry Robinson
DE- Glenn Foster
OG- Tim Lelito
LB- Kevin Reddick
CB- Rod Sweeting
TE- Josh Hill
CB- Jumal Rolle (on the Practice Squad)

Throw in players like Joseph Morgan, Tyrunn Walker, Tavaris Cadet, Justin Drescher, and Isa Abdul-Quddus from the past few years, and Pierre Thomas and Junior Galette before that and I'm wondering if any front office the NFL is better at identifying and signing UDFA's.

you might want to remove this

OG- Tim Lelito

not saying the guy doesnt have potential, just saying he was beat like a rented mule last week.

in fact, it looked just like this. if it were a mule of course:

On the contrary. He's an UFDA who made the 53 man roster and they had enough confidence in him to start him when Evans went down. Did he play well? No. But the same could be said of a lot of rookie OL's, some of whom were high draft choices. I think Lelito has a future in the league.

It's not just the FO side of things. The coaching has to be on the same page. How many teams would cut a 4th round RB in favor of a UDFA RB? That's what happened with Pierre Thomas. The general stance of playing the best players regardless of draft round/salary is a big part of the equation too.

Lelito was also trying to block Dockett, a 3x Pro Bowler

I think everyone keeps overlooking this very important fact. Could he have played better? Certainly, but he was going against one of the best interior linemen in the game. Considering it was his first real playing time he did well enough.

Right on...I think both the Kansas City tackle and Jax's Luke Joekel (#1 and #2 in the draft last year) are both struggling.

Lelito also played very well in the preseason.
Very well.

I think he'll improve.

dude is a stud, he's an all-pro DT. Lelito was going to get his arse kicked, we ALL knew this. We all hoped it wouldn't be too bad that brees would throw dumb passes

No mention of JoLonn Dunbar or Chris Ivory?

And don't forget UDFA we picked up from other teams who have made impacts. Guys like DLP, Lance Moore, Jamar Nesbit and Remi Ayodel.

Wut? It was probably the worst game I've ever seen an interior lineman play in my life. Honestly just lucky Brees made it out of the game without getting hurt. Dockett is a really good player, but far from his all pro days in 2009. He hasn't made the pro bowl in a couple years and only had 1.5 sacks in his previous 17 games. Lelito made him look like a first ballot hall of famer. I don't even want to know what would happen if he'd go up against Geno Atkins or Justin Smith.
