I am looking to buy a truck in Texas next week and I am a Louisiana resident. Other than the actual price of the truck, say 30k, what will I have to pay the day I buy it? Am I going to have to pay the taxes on it that day or do I pay them later? Thanks in advance.

I could be completely wrong here but I think you just pay for the truck if you buy it in Texas. Then when you go to get it registered in Louisiana you have to pay the tax, title & license fee for Louisiana.

Can anyone confirm?

This is true, but the dealer can take care of all that for you. Last vehicle I bought in TX, I just told them the parish I live in and they figured all the proper fees (I of course double checked them), and that was that. My plate showed up in the mail a few weeks later.

Thank you both. If I just pay for the truck in Texas and pay for the rest later, about how much am I looking at paying on say a 30k truck and how long would I have to pay it? I am asking because I get a good bonus in a few weeks and would like to just pay it all then if possible.

You will need to pay the state and local taxes (~9%), plus title and license (together about $2-300). You have I think 2 weeks maybe.

You could always just roll them into the financing and then make an extra payment when your bonus comes in to remove the hassle of going to the DMV or a title place. I would do that just for the easiness.

I live in Louisiana and bought my last truck (new) in Houston. Gave them (John Eagle Honda)a personal out of state check for the full amount. No fees or taxes were paid in TX. They put a temporary tag on and I drove it for about 6 months before I paid the TT&L fees in Louisiana. Very simple.

Don't they expire in 30 days?

Different states have different time frames on their temporary license plates, and a few don't give them at all. Regardless, Louisiana law allows you 40 days from purchase until you register the car, otherwise they will start assessing a late penalty.

I drove with my out of state temporary tag for about 4 months after it expired and never got stopped. I didn't pay any penalty when I finally registered it. I'm pretty lazy.
