I'm not a wine drinker, just not my thing. But a friend's dad is giving me his old gun safe and won't let me pay him for it. I'd like to buy him a bottle or two of red wine as a sign of my appreciation. My friend told me that's what his dad likes, but doesn't know what kind. I figure $30 should get a decent bottle right? Any guidance is appreciated. I'm really clueless here.

go to a local wine shop and ask the same question to them..

it's not about price with wine, it's about flavor.

$30 may not buy you good flavor where 2 $15 bottles may get more flavor..

make sense?

Find out what grapes he likes and go from there.

Dude my Albertson's has an aisle and a half full of wine. I don't think my local liquor store has more of a selection, although they may have rarer, more high end bottles. Plus it's like 2 blocks from me.

Yes. I think its $35-38.

Or you could ask someone at a wine store. In my experience that has been hit or miss.

that's nice that it's close but you don't know what you are looking for.

look for an old vine zin, cab or pinot that's expensive..

there will be 10-12 different labels in each grape.

all with different years and regions.

You could do two bottles of something like a Kim Crawford or the folie e deaux (sp?) higher end label.

I know I don't know what I'm looking for. That's why this thread exists Going to the liquor store is not a problem. Probably means I'll end up with a new bottle of bourbon for me as well. I only mentioned the Albertson's because I've noticed how much wine they have. Half of it is across from the beer coolers.

If I can get 2 good bottles then I'm fine with that. I don't know what a good bottle of wine costs. I cannot understate how little I know about wine. Red with steak, white with fish. End of wine knowledge.

Below are LA's wine recs lists for 2012. Helped me since I'm wine foolish as well. If he sees your thread, hopefully, he'll give you some help. I ordered some wine from a store he recommended in CA and the recipient was thrilled with the bottles I selected. They were all reasonably priced.

Under $20.

Over $20

Get him a fairly serious Rioja. You won´t break the bank, and that tempranillo grape sits well with everyone.

At that price point you can find Reserva and not Crianza (longer time in cask), and feel confident they´ll appreciate it.

wineries I see here are

Marqués de Riscal
Marqués de la Concordia
Marqués de Cáceres

(yeah, everybody´s a Marquis)

Nailed it. Scanning the wine section of the grocery store without doing any research on what he might like or what wines are what is pretty pointless.

I like wine but have limited knowledge. I have never been disappointed with his lists but I have been disappointed with recommendations at wine stores before.

Saldo by Orin Swift. Prisoner gets alot of press, but Saldo (to me anyway) is a better wine.
