This is absolutely nuts and really pissed me off when people think we should allocate resources to something besides space, like for instance bombing brown people.

What color people would you prefer that we bomb?

Why feel the need to bring religion into this? Way to derail the thread from something we can all, no matter religious preference, appreciate.

quote:

They found that one star was orbiting around something (turned out to be a black hole) at 19million miles per hour
That's only about 0.028c (c = speed of light).

If you want to get into "beyond comprehension": Relativity can be used to argue that that star is motionless while everything else (the rest of the universe) is moving at 19 million mph.

Right, but the fact that it's as large as it is moving at that speed is what makes it incomprehensible. Itty-bitty light particles (or waves?) moving at c is 'more' comprehensible, to me.

Great, so we spent hundreds of millions of dollars for a few pictures and a 5 minute video that mean absoutely nothing to anyone.

I hate when people throw out "incomprehensible" and "the human brain cannot grasp"... This video did it a few times. Just because the PR folks at NASA can't comprehend size relation doesn't mean that the human brain is not possible of comprehending it.

idiots.

link?
ETA: hubble cost a lot more than hundreds of millions. I think 2-3 billion.

Either way, it's been contributing to science for many years now and will continue to do so.

Nah, I mean it's cool to think about but

1. Even if the telescope gives them a better idea of how big the universe is they are still just throwing our random numbers.

2. Like the video said if the information is "incomprehensible" then what use is it? How is finding this out going to change anything if we can't even understand what it means?

i was watching a show and Neil DeGrasse Tyson stated that there are more stars in the universe than grains of sand on Earth.

i don't know how accurate that is but it blew my mind. i can't go to a beach without thinking about that statement

Only idiots find it incomprehensible. I just said that.
The information is not incomprehensible.
