I know there are alot of 1911 shooters on here. Anyone have any experience with either of these, and if so, what's preference? I know they are both of quality and are reputable manufacturer's. Wilson's are about $10 more per mag. Im strictly concerned about reliability and durability. Gun is Springfield Armory Range Officer.

I've heard nothing but good things about Wilson Combat 47D mags.

BTW..I have a SA RO also.

Have Wilson Combat 47D's for my SA Mil-Spec. No issues and they are easily stripped for cleaning vs the factory mags.

Both are great magazines. The main difference you'll get in these two are the followers. The CMC mags have a "non-friction" metal follower whereas the one in the Wilson mag is polymer. I kind of prefer the Wilson spring and follower but the CMC setup still works great.

I would consider getting Wilson or CMC 10 round mags if you don't plan to use this gun for concealed carry. I have 10 round Checkmate mags with Wilson springs and followers in them (refer to my avatar pic). I like 10 rounds in a 1911. It really doesn't make the gun that much larger, hence, if you don't plan on carrying it, I would get 10 rounders.

But besides that, you can't go wrong with either manufacturer. Both are high quality.

Both the McCormick mags and the SA mags are made by Shooting Star Industries.

Just check the follower in the mag, they are the same.

I don't have any 8 rnd Wison mags, but have been very happy w/ my different 8 rnd Chip McCormick mags. The only mag I have that occasionally has a failure to feed is a Wilson 10 rnd.

Thanks all for the responses. Bapple, interesting on the 10 rd mag because the above quote is similar to alot of reviews Ive found (googled chat rooms) on the 10 rd mags. This will be a home defense gun (2nd option, shotgun is my first) so Im worried about that possible failure to feed on the 10 rounders. Any experience with this in particular on your 10 rd Wilson? Is it much ado about nothing?

I guess I'm mostly used to seeing competition shooters use them since 10 rounds is a very square number. And my 1911 isn't a defensive piece (just a fun gun) anyway.

But then again, my 1911 feeds my 10 rounders great and I haven't seen the mags cause another 1911 to hiccup. I even ran my 10 rounders in a 1943 Remington Rand recently. It ran fine.

I guess the thing that may cause people to blow whistles is that the 1911 wasn't designed with magazines as large as 10 rounds. Hell, even 8 rounders aren't in the original design. Since spring technology has come so far they have been able to design a larger magazine with a better spring to hold 10 rounds and put enough pressure on the massive 45 ACP rounds to have the next round at the ready.

So really it all comes down to personal comfort. If you're more comfortable running an 8 rounder, then that should work fine. If you buy 10 round mags and they run 100%, then I think they could be trusted. But again, you would have to do some testing of your own to determine that.

I would probably buy some 10 rounders anyway for the range, since 10 rounds is a much more square number than 8. If you end up wanting to keep your 8 round mags in your gun loaded for defensive purposes and use the 10 rounders for fun then that is your decision.
