Syria 'welcomes' proposal to put chem weapons under international control

What the.....?
quote:

Washington (CNN) -- Syria on Monday embraced a Russian proposal for Bashar al-Assad to put his nation's chemical weapons under international control as the United States considers possible military action over an alleged poison gas attack last month.

quote:

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem told reporters in Moscow on Monday that his nation "welcomes" a statement from Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who said his country would urge Syria to take that step if it would avert a U.S. military response.

The comments came as Secretary of State John Kerry also seemed to endorse a similar scenario.

Assad "could turn over every single bit of his chemical weapons to the international community in the next week," Kerry said during a news conference with British Foreign Secretary William Hague. "But he isn't about to do it and it can't be done obviously."

Very, very strange.

If he does this and we still attack, our pants will be around our ankles.

why can't it be done. That's what I don't understand. Does Assad not have control of the chemical weapons and their location?

Exactly, get the international community involved and see how far Kerry and Obama will go to violate international law.

But why now? The "action" is on the verge of defeat in congress. And why is Kerry saying he won't or can't?

The time period is too short even if he was not in the midst of a civil war, the time limit by Kerry was a poison pill in the proposal.

Why would Kerry reward Putin for putting Obama and Kerry in Check again?

If Kerry was looking for a way out he wouldn't make another stupid demand.

Russia is playing this so well on the international front.. They are the big winners in this whole thing.. They come out smelling like roses in almost any outcome at this point.

Russian diplomatic efforts making Obama really look bad here.

Russia is coming off as the peace maker and Obama as a war monger.

Wow..........................

I imagine it is related to the limits of the international community to enforce this. Syria wouldn't even let inspectors visit the site for a week after they used the weapons.

It is odd that Syria would agree to this if they really believed they were innocent. Isn't it strange that they seem to be showing zero interest in getting to the bottom of who actually did it?

Would it be considered a victory for Obama if pressure did lead to Syria giving up all of its chemical weapons?

Putin and his boys played this perfectly and will make the US look horrible in the process.

Not sure I figured I'd live to see the day where on the world stage, Russia came off as more respectable than the U.S. but I'll be damned. The U.S. has lost it's mind on foreign policy. I mean, we were always shaky but so were the Ruskies. Now? WTF!!!

Kerry's tough talk aside, it is possibly the best outcome for all concerned. Obama saves face. Russia looks like a good guy for brokering a solution. Assad looks like less of a bad guy for accepting the deal. The obvious questions are:
1. How can this be accomplished while the fighting continues? The rebels would have to agree to a ceasefire for it to be effective.
2. Does Assad actually have control of all the chemical weapons and manufacturing facilities? Again the rebels might have to cooperate to give up whatever they might have.

Note: The Russians are likely doing this because they see the endgame here: goading Syria and Iran into attacking followed by justification to take out Iran's nuclear facilities avoiding international outrage over an unjustified unilateral attack.

That was the saving face measure everyone was looking for. I suspect the Russians brokered this.

Saudi is funding the rebels - so the next deal to be brokered is over the pipeline.
