OB Mechanics....Question for you re: Toyota 4Runner

My wife's 2003 Toyota 4Runner 4WD is having an issue. I verified it as well. When you let off the accelerator the tach drops to 1K RPM even though you may be at 50-60mph...then when you accelerate..the tach doesn't respond...and the truck "jumps into gear" about 2K RPMs. I'm thinking there's a bad sensor, but no trouble code.
Here's my other thought processes...seems like a bad sensor..but I could be wrong...the kick in the kidneys when it jumps into gear is actually the computer reading the rpms causing the tranny to lock up (as it's supposed to) at a certain RPM.
I'm no mechanic..and surely not with the newer models...if it would have thrown a code..I would have been fine..but no check engine...no code.
Any other ideas are welcome. And please no "Buy American next time comments". That Yota has put my Chevy and my Ford to shame. Not to mention..that engine IS made in America...right here in N. Bama.

There's your problem.
J/K, I have no credible input.

That there is funny...I don't care who you are. I like those kind of responses...that's almost as good as one that does have a technical response.
Nice post.
Nice post.

Gumps are some of the crappiest drivers on the planet and I sure as hell wouldn't trust one to build an engine no matter how many robots are helping.
Without an idea of the mileage, maintenance, and a snapshot of what the ECM was seeing when the problem occurs there isn't much that can be figured out. Could be a sensor, could be a failing TC, could be the TPS...etc.

Transmission
ETA: I'd check transmission fluid first.

Mileage (w/o going outside and looking at Odometer)...probably around 170K. Maintenance...well kept. May have let the oil go 1K over the 3K range twice. No engine codes/check engine light, so that's why the sensor idea is considered...but I don't know how much faith I can put in it. I do all the maintenance.
I can check the transmission fluid..but I don't think it's that...not with the tach doing what its doing also.

Take it to Auto-zone and check the codes. Once you get the printout, Google the codes and a Toyota message board will pop up. Look on there, there are usually a lot of mechanics that frequent those sites. If you can't find it there, then you should take it to a well recommended mechanic, not the dealership. A car with that king of mileage is like crack to them. You will owe more than it is worth before you finish.

Ok. I don't need Autozone. I have a code reader. No check engine light. Will codes be generated without having a check engine light illuminated?

Possible, reset the computer and drive it,then check again. If no code then it is usually mechanical.

If the CEL is not on, there probably won't be any codes that you can read with a generic code reader. There may be codes though, but you will need a factory scan tool to read them.

When's the last time you drained the transmission fluid? My brother has a 2003 4Runner and have done the simple drain and refill twice and it's not quite 170k. Some code readers can pick up pending codes that won't trigger the CEL. There are also specific tests that diagnose transmission issues that you might want to take it to the dealer for.

Yes. If the code is pending, the check engine light won't come on, but the code will show.

^ effing this!
I have had both a 2002 Ford Explorer and a 2004 GMC Envoy. I have joined a forum dedicated to each vehicle in the past and they have been insanely helpful. They have been MUCH more helpful than any dealer or mechanic because they have step-by-step processes to do anything. You also see the same diagnoses over and over again since the problems are usually typical.
That would definitely be my suggestion. Find a good Toyota forum and go from there.

that will def make trans shift funny
