Know there were a bunch of standing room people (needless to say), but can this happen again where more people are in the stadium than it can hold? If so what limits this? Just curious if fire rules and no more general admin seating means you cannot have more than a stadium holds

I think they caught hell from the Fire People for letting so many people go in. I think at that time there was no restriction on the Student Section and they let everyone in that showed up with an ID. I had Season Tickets in the South End Zone and people were everywhere and you could not walk. My Nephew was in the Student Section and he said you could not move, go to the bath room, or anything.

It was awesome! I was in the student section every guy had a girl on his lap whether they were his date or not. That's how I met my college girlfriend

This is the story IIRC. Fire Marshall forced LSU to limit the # of students in the SS.

What's interesting today is that there are localized pockets in the SS that are every bit as dense as was the whole SS in '83. If the ability to evacuate students from the higher sections is the concern, then ok. If other, it would seem the same problem exists today as then just on a lesser scale.

Also, I thought the "capcity" of TS then was approx 76K, not 79K. Can someone confirm?

My father sat in a folded chair behind the sidelines for it.

I was at that game. "Official" capacity was 78,000 at that time. And you are correct, the difference was the number of students attending the game-they were the only persons without assigned seats. At that time, there was no limit to the number of students allowed in. If they had a valid student ID, they got in.

I was there. Most students ever by far. I think it was the first home game of the season so everyone was there. Great game.

Yep
Awesome days they were. Just show up, get in.

Every stair in the SS had like 3 people on it.

This is how you get 83,000 people into a 78,000 capacity stadium!

I was there. I had season tickets in the new upper deck, but loved it/ It was packed and loud. Washington had been ranked #3 the previous year and a close game was expected. We won easy with 2 running backs grinding it out.

The south end zone was so full you couldn't move. People were on the stairs and the top row was filled with people standing against the wall.

I know ppl that went to the game and they claim that ppl were sitting in the isles. Apparently the fire marshall really cracked down after that.
