Opening day of deer season for a Lexington County hunter wound up more like a grand finale than a first-day hunt. Shelton Yonce, a college student, bagged four trophy bucks in full velvet before he even got a chance to climb into his deer stand on property in Orangeburg County.

Not too bad for opening day. I'm not sure I would have shot all four but whatever trips your trigger.

How do velvet antlers look as they age on a mount?

Wouldnt be bad if it was a short season, like a week or less or if you could only hunt a few days.

I worry more about how much time I get to spend in the woods than filling a limit

I'm not sure I've never killed one in velvet but all mounts I've seen in velvet look good

If treated correctly they don't suffer any degradation beyond what would be normal for taxidermy.

I would have only shot one, but shot whatever you want if it's legal

Actually I wouldn't have shot any.

I don't care if a dozen record size bucks lined with signs saying "shoot me" on them, I wouldn't fill all my tags because I wouldn't have an excuse to go back out to the woods for the rest of the season.

I have no problems with it. I've killed 5 doe in 4 minutes before.

Psh. I'd still go without a gun and bring whiskey, copenhagen, a good book, and a camera.

Or bring beer and hunt with one of my buddies. Or bring a kid. There's always an excuse to get in the deer stand.

Well as a young college kid who pretty much doesn't have to answer to anybody ever, I can't comment on that

I've done all of the above after running out of buck tags. It's nice to have the pressure off and just go enjoy it.

If I have a tag left that's their arse though
