dirty birds @ Saints initial thoughts

What's your early thoughts on the game?
There's a lotta folks on the dirty bird bandwagon. They cite the solid D and tremendous group of skill players. What I think is being missed is the potential weakness of their O-line. They lost their best OL, Clabo, to free agency. Replacement Lamar Holmes was the 4th worst OT out of 157 graded by PFF last year. LT Sam Baker seemed to mature and play solid last year. Going into last year the word bust was starting to mentioned because of injuries and such poor performance. They're also extremely thin on backup talent there in event of injuries.
The number of sacks, pressures, & hurries by our new D could be a vital factor in the outcome of the first game.

No but seriously, there will be a lot of screams for help.

DB's need to step up and make plays. Hopefully Lewis got his rust off from Andre Johnson. Vaccaro could be the wild card.
If he comes in and shuts down Gonzalez like we drafted him to do, we will win. Jackson will get his rushing yards. Just need to prevent the big plays.

I agree with you Blues. Hopefully Galette and Wilson can get back on the field. You know darn well they held back a ton in preseason. Falcons O really have no film to go off of for this new defense. I'll say Saints O do what they do and some new faces make an early impact and state their case that this D will be different this season. Vaccaro lays the wood to White early and Lewis picks little Matty off.

Jackson will get his rushing yards.

I made mention of Jackson's potential downfall as a runner in another thread.
The Rams Oline was much better at run blocking last year than the Falcons, and this year the Falcons line has gotten even worse. And it showed in the preseason.
He does bring a legit threat in the passing game.

It will be a replay of the Saints-Vikings rematch of 2010.
Vikings were all set to prove to the world how "great" they were in 2009. And with their offseason acquisitions added to their already "great" team, they were sure they were gonna destroy the Saints and then the league.
They didn't realize how hard it is to re-ignite the same chemistry of a great season, how lucky it is to stay healthy, or get the same breaks & miracle endings.
The Vikings lost to the Saints 14-9, then went 6-10 for the season.
Now the Falcons have a suspect OL, a rebuilt secondary, and have heavily invested false hope in their newest used cars: Umenyiora & Jackson.
The Falcons will lose to the Saints and their season will be a sure disappointment.

They are gifted in skill players, and I think to counter that, we need to be extra physical. Off the snap. Off the line. FU. You don't go out on your route until we say so.

Over/under 5 sacks, I'm taking the over.

I'll take the under, but over 7 in hurries.

Agreed. This week is going to be even slower than the past week was.

I am absolutely convinced the Saints win. If not, my entire season may be fricked up.

Really the only thing that concerns me.

solid D
Considering they'll be depending on two rookies to contribute at DB, I'd say they're far from solid. No one on their D-line really scares me although they're usually pretty solid. Weatherspoon is an animal, but their other LB's are just alright.

This is absolutely going to determine the game IMO. As you mentioned they lost Clabo but people forget Todd McClure also retired who was very, very solid for them. I look for Ryan to bring some crazy pressure in this game. I just hope we don't play off coverage behind it like Williams used to do still allowing easy catches.

one thing I noticed last year was that Sedrick Ellis actually played pretty well against them. I'm not sure who was blocking him on ATL's O-line though.
that first play of the game in ATL he drove his man off the ball and disrupted Matt Ryan's throwing lane. Ryan made a poor throw that should have been picked off by Malcolm Jenkins but of course, he dropped it.
I think where Ellis lined up would have been over their right guard. That looks like it could be a weak spot.
