I've heard that this is possible, but I was wondering if anyone has a fool-proof method.

I have a Char-Broil smoker/grill, but it doesn't hold heat very well. I use it for grilling.

I was thinking that maybe I could get my grill to 250/300 (somewhere around there) degrees, close the lid and then put a butt on it for 30 minutes to capture the smokey flavor of the wood. Then take it off and finish it in the oven.

you would need to leave it on the smoker for longer than 30 minutes. i'd think at least 2 hours

Butt in oven for 8 hrs @ 250 covered with tinfoile with a cup of liquid for every butt. After 8 hours turn off oven and leave in oven for 4 more hours. Season just like you would if on the pit. Comes out great.

Ask TJ Ribs how to do excellent smoked ribs in the oven. They pull it off daily.

If the heat dropped low at the end of the two hours.... Like 150 low .... Would it ruin the butt?

No you would be okay I think but would actually move it as soon as you start losing your heat.

I do it at least until I get a nice bark, and then I wrap in and finish it in the oven.

Get a cheap masterbuilt electric smoker

Basically an outdoor oven that creates smoke

Set it and forget it
