Smith looked a hell of alot better last night than he did the first game. I think eventually teams would game plan to exploit his lack of speed. Might be better in the long run for the team to get younger and faster at the position.

Smith was gonna season long lightning rod for criticism. He was too fricking big and slow to be back peddling into pass coverage. It wasn't a good fit, PERIOD.

Sucks for him. Blessing in disguise for the defense.

I just keep thinking Adkins diet or something everytime I see it. It was making Ryan angry.

do we even have enough healthy to go 2 deep?

look for switch to 4-3 for the last preseason game.

Wilson, Richardson, Atkins, Martin, and Johnson and then Galette once he gets healthy.

We could be 3 deep.

No way. What Jordan, Hicks, Jenkins, and Foster have shown alone is enough to keep us at 34.
If the d-line is as disruptive as we think they can be, I don't think we need a Von Miller to be effective.
Look at what happened to Aldon Smith last year in the playoffs after Justin Smith went down. He didn't register a single sack in the postseason. Even the best OLBs need their d-lines to take up blocks and cause their own disruption.

I'll say this. Ryan likes being versatile so you will see some 4-3 like we have in the preseason, but 3-4 is still our base. You'll also so some 2 man lines, 1 man lines, and no linemen, along with 3-3-5(with several variations) and plenty of other stuff.

But with Smith out I think we actually see less 4-3 as he was the main LBer switching to down lineman.

Richardson and maybe Galette could fill that role, but Smith was the best suited to do it.

I didn't want it to happen like this. I wanted him to be able to play for a 4-3 team. That's probably his career. Sucks.

Agreed. But thank god he's off the field

You serious? Who will play opposite of Jordan? Hicks? The D line is way better in the 34. I would like to see them use Harper as an OLB and keep the next safety that otherwise would be cut.

I know he was a liability in coverage but he was still our best run defending OLB and was decent enough at rushing the passer(has looked better than anyone not named Galette and Wilson and we haven't even seen them play yet).

This hurts our team a great deal more than it helps the 3-5 plays a game he would have been in coverage.

Team is better off. He'll be out of the league next year.

Roman harper can do all those things, with vaccaro and jenkins playing safety

I'll just have to agree to disagree with you there. I dont think he was that big of an asset. And he didnt bring anything irreplaceable to the table. Smith gets tired and gives up. He's been doing it for a couple of seasons now.

Roman Harper can not do the thing Smith was going to be asked to do at OLB.

What exactly was Smith going to be asked to do? Stop the run? You know he will get tore up in coverage. Not saying Harper is good in coverage, but he is better than Willy.

I agree he can do those things but it's not from the same spot. He's come down in the box as the 8th guy and could find the hole. As a LBer he'd be getting blocked by bigger guys way more often.

Could he do it in pass downs and as spot duty? Sure, but Smith was doing it every down.
