My sister just bought this rifle for 100 bucks. It is pretty old but looks like it was in pretty good condition. Remington says the rifle was first introduced in 1960 and discontinued in 1980. The rifling is strong and clean. And the bluing is probably around 90%. My sister said all the gun needed was a really good cleaning. I was just interested to see if anyone is familiar with this rifle and if my sister got a good deal or not.

It'll work just fine inside 175 yards, though you can certainly take longer shots. They can have ejection issues. When I shot one( for more than two decades) I avoided jams by putting a thin streak of Rem Oil down the casing of the first cartridge chambered...never fouled after that. Wish I still had mine for old times sake.

I have one.

I handload for it and do fairly well with accuracy but it won't ever act like a bolt gun.

Remington had a recall out on these guns 3-4 years ago -- problems w/ bolt design //chamber dimensions.

Unless she cleans it thoroughly and regularly, she's likely to have reliability issues. Not everyone has these problems, but most people do.

I'd have three of them, two in 30.06 and 1 in 35 Whelen. All three rifles shoot a 2 inch group at 200 yards. as for the jamming problems, the most common problem was aftermarket magazines. If you have the OEM magazine you are good to go.

My uncle has one and he loves it. You just have to stay on top of cleaning it.

Tried my damnedest to get my dads to group worth a shite and never could. Tried all different types of load, best I could get was about a 2" group but it would alway throw the third or fourth shot.

Thanks for the info. I felt like she got a good deal but I am not a big Remington fan and especially not now. As a result I really know nothing about Remington firearms.

any 30-06 for $100 is a hell of a good deal...

as the others say, the 742 has some shortfalls...but I would say that more deer have been killed with it than any other modern rifle...no telling how many millions of those rifles have been sold through the years...

just clean it up good after every hunt and when loading, let the bolt slam hard and you are good...
