1 1/4 oz
1 1/16th oz
1 1/2 oz

Can someone tell me what these mean, exactly? Grew up shooting #5 lead. Since steel I've shot 1 1/4 oz but never really understood how low was too low and if so, why is it sold.

That's the total weight you could have 1 1/8 oz of number 5 shot or 7/8 oz of 5 shot etc

Something else to keep in mind is the shell velocity. Whatever pay load you choose, stay consistent with it. 1 & 1/8th for me - 1550 fps.
