Obamacare: if you are between 18-34, it is cheaper to NOT enroll

quote:

This study finds that in 2014 many single people aged 18-34 who do not have children will have a substantial financial incentive to forego insurance on the exchanges and instead pay the individual mandate penalty of $95 or one percent of income. About 3.7 million of those ages 18-34 will be at least $500 better off if they forgo insurance and pay the penalty. More than 3 million will be $1,000 better off if they go the same route.

Definitely. What's 1% income penalty vs. $400 a month premium.

But... if they get sick or break an arm or something, they have no insurance, right? Or are they automatically enrolled in an exchange?

Actually the highest eligible premium you will pay be around $364 in the highest income brackets to receive tax credits.

Pre existing conditions can't be used to deny coverage. Just call them up on the way to the hospital.

So... again, its no insurance versus being insured?

So Obamacare would force people to waste $3B in private capital... Funny... Barry never mentioned that on the CSPAN. debates...

how do you think they plan to fund the high risk individuals?

this will be laughable when the young healthy, who they need to make this work, balk at just giving fedgov money.

That is just the start.

When those young relatively health participants declining coverage are tossed into the actuarials, prices will further spike. Subsequent cost escalation will then impact feasibility of 35-45y/o's to remain covered, which will further increase costs. And so on . . .

This was said at the time they were sneaking the Bill through... People said that penalty would be less than buying insurance.

so this thing has a built in negative feedback loop?

like it was designed to fail.

People under 30 can get a catastrophic high-deductible plan. It may still be cheaper to pay the penalty, but it was also cheaper to not have any insurance before.

I wonder if this is evident in the calculator?

1% AGI or a flat 1% of what you earned before taxes, 401k, etc...

If it's a flat 1% before any deductions then I'll just spend the additional $49/mo (for my plan) and have insurance.

It's a brilliant idea on their part, really. 2 possible outcomes: You're either insured or they make money off you via the penalty. Not saying I agree.

I have realized it all along. But I can't help but wonder how many 18-34 Obama voters realized the burden of funding Obamacare was going to fall on them?

But the real story here is the money this will drain out of the economy. And worse for GDP growth, its being drained from a demographic that spends the most money....

And people wonder why the economy is slow to recover?

They can just simply buy insurance immediately after this happens.

Hooray for forcing insurance companies to cover pre-exsisting conditions.

Stupid kids with no insurance. They're being referred to as the invincibles because they think nothing can ever happen to them. It won't be cancer or a heart attack, but a $100,000 hospital bill when they get in a car wreck or fall off a balcony when they're drunk. frick them if they don't want to take responsibility.

Getting insurance immediately after you break your neck won't cover the injury. Unless you wait until all the paper work is filled out to go to the hospital, in which case you deserve to die anyway.
