Did this today at Dixey Bar on the mouth of Mobile Bay. We caught 4 today.

I have a 7ft rod that's rated for up to 17lb test. 4000 Shimano Stradic reel. 30lbs braid.
3/4 oz weight to swivel then 30-50lb leader to 5/0 kahle hook.

We are using large croakers for bait.

How you rig is dependent on where you're fishing. This for Caminada pass this weekend, or elsewhere?

It's more fun on lighter tackle, you just have to play them longer. You can land a 25 - 30 lbs red on 10 lbs test with a 30 lbs leader. We were catching them last weekend near Grand Isle on sparkle beatles and Voodoo shrimp.

I catch em on my 6'8 falcon with braided line on a 1/2 oz jighead. Aint exactly what you would call a "srtong enough" rig for em, but damn if it don't make the fight a blast.

In that case. . .

I would recommend rigging some 30-50lb leaders with 4-8oz egg sinkers and 6/0-8/0 circle hooks.

Last year in the pass I was using 3oz weight and my bait kept getting picked up by the current. This year's tidal range is greater, so regardless of weather, the tide will be rippin' in the pass and you will want something heavy enough to get your bait down to the bottom.
