What does Stanford's recent football success say about other PAC teams?

With the fall of USC due to sanctions and coaching, the two that have stepped up to carry the PAC mantle are Oregon and Stanford. Oregon makes sense to me given Chip Kelly and the money of Nike, but Stanford does not. While no doubt they have had good coaching, I see them as the academic powerhouse of the conference, not the football powerhouse. What is going on at programs like Washington, UCLA, Cal, and Colorado? I would have thought they were more likely to take the mantle. What am I missing? Am I underestimating the football program that is Stanford?

Stanford does have a pretty good football history and they run a very good program from the top down.

Stanford has the biggest endowment in I-A.
They have a strong overall athletics history.
Their success says nothing about other schools, just as whatever Vanderbilt does says nothing about LSU.

Yes. Stanford is recruiting outstanding in areas like offensive line and QB. They are recruiting great in other areas too, and are starting to build a very large foundation for future success.

Bad-to-Mediocre hires with a touch of impatience. All 4 of those have some decent history behind them as well. Its all about the right hires and putting for the right resources and emphasis on the football program.

I think it says something about the rest of the league. Stanford is a fantastic program but like 7 or 8 of those programs in the PAC are garbage.

They can offer a pretty much unparalleled combination of athletics and academics.
A degree from Stanford is pretty damn impressive and a helluva back up plan after football which would be quite the selling point on a the recruiting trail.

None of them was impatient. Embree was the only one with a short tenure but he was dead from the beginning and not capable of digging them out the hole.

This more than anything else. Stanford was absolute garbage before Harbaugh showed up. It also doesn't hurt that other programs in the conference have imploded relatively recently and are trying to rebuild at the moment.
As for endowments, which are really used more for academic and research purposes, there are plenty of other schools with very large endowments while having under-performing football programs. Duke, UVA, Rice, Vandy, Minnesota, UNC, etc. all have top-30 endowments but are hardly considered traditional football powerhouses.

If you have the talent and half a brain, you'd be insane to turn down Stanford as a recruit.
If my son had offers from every FBS school in the country, I'd push for Stanford. It's a future changer.
