Credit Report Story

I havent always been diligent with CC payments
(college) but for about 5-10 years now I have not bought anything on credit. The only debt I have now is my house. For years I could not understand why I had a sub 700 credit score so I started purchasing all expenses monthly on a cash back card and have been building it that way. Still could not get above 710. Recently i bought a credit monitoring service which allowed all 3 reports/scores once a month.

I realized an overpayment from the government during katrina was costing me who knows how much over the life of my accounts. I did an online inquiry through all of the major credit monitoring services and disputed the items. I had all my documentation ready to prove my case, but low and behold they just took it off. So now im sitting at 790+- across the board....

Moral to the story if you have 1-3 negatives on your credit report just go to TU EQF EXP online and you can dispute items for free. If I would have known this I prob could have saved some dough on my houses. Real easy to do and they took it off 3 days after I submitted it. FYI

Which company did you use to find out your credit scores?

It was a service from USAA through transunion. THey will pull your scores and reports for all 3. I think it was like $24 a month, but I only planned on keeping it while I straightened this out.

I pay $9.99 a month through experience and I can get all 3 of my reports and scores once a year but I can get my experience report and score anytime I want too.

They alert me to changes in my credit report also.

Without looking too much into it, the scores that you received from USAA are not your FICO scores. They are FAKO. Look it up. Big difference.

If you want your FICO scores, you have to get them from MyFico dot com. Also, Experian no longer provides credit score to the general public.

Whatever.

Point to teh story is if you have negatives on your credit report you do not have to pay anything or join the service. Just go to the websites and dispute it.

FYI its not usaa its through USAA. like a members only discount.

Well of course. The credit bureaus are obligated to have an accurate report and you have the legal right to dispute something.

BTW, don't worry much about your credit score. Just make sure the report is accurate at all times and that any legitimate negatives are removed after the seven-year limit.

re: Credit Report Story

Is there a way to disput something on the grounds that you were a dumbass in college?

I decided to get a credit card in college to start building my credit score. Turns out the first month I thought I had it setup for automatic payment, but it hadn't gone through or I'd set it up wrong. So my first month was a missed payment and then everything after that is golden.

It was like a $45 bill on a $500 limit card. I now have 3 other cards with limits as high as $7K, but my credit score won't hit 700+ cause of this one fvcking missed payment.

Is there any way to speed-up the 7 year window for something this small? Also, once the 7 years hits (2.5 years from now), will it be completely removed with no lasting side effects or does it always factor in somewhat?

Also, I know applying for new credit cards can hurt your credit score, can applying for a credit increase hurt your score as well?

TIA!

I was going to say that in this thread. maybe I was not clear in my OP.

My delinquency was within the 7 year window and they removed it.

After going through the process I would say give it a shot and see what happens. Its really easy,

Do you just sign up on each site and go to "Dispute a Claim?" I have an issue on my report I've been trying like hell with Chase to remove. Put a hotel room on a cc and forgot about it for 6 months. Needless to say, I got screwed.

ETA - does it hurt your score to sign up and dispute these?

Can you link the Exp

They don't exactly give you a choice to pick "Sorry, forgot to pay - please remove" on reasons why you're disputing

100% correct. I used to subscribe to USAA monitoring and those scores were a good bit off from my true FICO scores. I believe, though, that MyFico just recently began selling the Experian score too.

To the OP: sometimes disputing items just freezes them in a way but they don't disappear. If they removed the items, that's awesome and will never affect your score. If they just marked them as "customer disputes this item", then your score will disregard those marks until the dispute is worked out. Some mortgages will require you to settle certain disputes before they will lend you money.

Really? Something similar happened to me and I forgot to set up the recurring payment. I'm in the 760s or so with probably less available credit than you

What are the balances on those cards?
