So I think I want a canoe for a few reasons.
1. A bayou within 300 yards of the house
2. Take my lil sensei out to lean how to paddle, ways of the water, squirrel hunt, juggin etc
3. Use for when I hunt Sherburne and paddle up big Alabama.
4. General outdoor fun
What I need to learn is what is too heavy? Cheap or bad materials?
Good reputation brands?
I will also need to buy or build a way to haul it from the house to bayou w my ATV.
Thx OB
I saw these at Dicks ( ya I know)

I have an old town guide And I don't believe you could destroy it by running over it with a semi

Check out the state regulations before buying. I was told by a game warden that even a canoe if it is over 14', you have to have registration and numbers on it. Mine is like 13'6" and I don't have to have anything. Also, if you plan on using a trolling motor, you have to have numbers even if it is under 14'. I never confirmed this info, but it is what the GW told me.

Good advice on registration
I have a polyethelene canoe that has 3 seats, weight just under 100 lbs, and is extra wide to provide stability when fishing . The material will get scratches but can't really be broken like fiberglass, nor dented like aluminum, nor eaten or rotted like wood.
As far as pulling behind atv, tie the front end to the middle of the rear rack with about 4" of slack. A little past half way back place a 2x4 under the canoe that extends 6" each side. Use double threaded bolts and replacement lawnmower wheels to mount on the ends of the 2x4. Use eye bolts to connect a cam buckle strap over the canoe to hold on the "axle"

Check out Nucanoe. Safe and stable enough to stand up in.

Good rep brands: Old Town, Mohawk, Voyageur
You want one flat and wide, since you are not river tripping, and will have a kid. As light as you can afford. That Dicks canoe will be fine, but if you really get into it later, you might appreciate a higher end model from the Backpacker.

So if I never put a trolling motor on it or never tow it w a trailer on the road, it needs numbers from the state?

Don't know about Louisiana but here in Florida, if it doesn't have a motor it doesn't need to be registered, no matter the type of boat.

I just got back from a week fishing trout streams in Idaho. Shallow water, fast current. There were two canoes available and I really liked the Grumman 17 foot square stern aluminum canoe. Light on the water against the current and solid. The other canoe was wider, which made it more difficult to paddle upstream. You can also clamp a small motor on it.
