What should I consider when choosing a bank?

I'm 31 and have been with Regions since I was 18 b/c at the time they offered free checking with a monthly direct deposit (and my mom was putting in a small monthly deposit for gas funds). I've never really gave much thought to changing since all I do is have a checking account and use a debit card. I try to only keep about $4-6K in my checking account at any given time, so interest rate isn't really much of a concern.

However, I'm getting married in the Spring and the fiancé and I plan to open a joint account. What should I be looking for when choosing which bank to open this account with? I feel silly for asking this question, but I'm sure y'all can give me some good advice and/or your bank of choice and why.

TIA

Location and BS charges. Regions seems to have the best locations for me with few BS charges. I have five accounts there.

Convenience mainly. And services you will likely use the most.

Use a credit union... Very few fees, quality service, and nationwide service center access.

A friend just switched from Regions to Chase because of their fees. Regions was charging to take a picture of a check for deposit while chase does not

I live in Louisiana but bank with USAA. No BS charges, excellent customer service and if you qualify for insurance / retirement services, you should take advantage of it.

I just told Whitney to piss off and moved all my money into Chase - zero fees, 1000000x better online access, and there's an ATM/branch like every 500 feet. Banks are totally fungible to me and I just couldn't hold onto Whitney anymore out of nothing but sentimental value, especially after they announced they were essentially closing half the branches where I live.

Plus there are some legit perks for existing Chase customers when shopping for mortgages, which I'll be doing in the next 1-2 years.

I second LSURussian with the convenience sentiment. I maintain my checking with Regions simply because I am practically a walk away from the nearest branch at any given time. I keep savings and cds with Penfed since the rates are slightly better, and I don't plan to touch the money unless it is an absolute emergency. I will just wire the funds over if needed.

Chase is just unbelievable in the online arena. I have money across 4 banks and I just like Chase.

Then La Cap

Look for a free toaster or cooler for opening a new account.

Really look at BS fees and convenience. Screw you Iberia Bank!

I've stuck with Capital One soley because they don't charge foreign transaction fees. Otherwise, I'd likely move to chase to get bonus points on my cards.

Services, fees and relationship. All banks will have the same package of services, make sure those you consider are not lacking. The fees they charge will vary, so look for reasonable fees for the services you expect to use. And finally, does the bank demonstrate that they want to keep your business by valuing your patronage?

For checking services that's spot on. A checking account is basically a commodity product.

I handle just about everything online these days. Since Schwab is my 401(k) custodian and I've dealt with them lots in the past and been happy with them, I just give them all my business. I use their mobile app to scan and deposit the occasional check.

If you need in-person stuff such as deposit boxes that's another matter but for pure checking services I've always been happy with Schwab.

I would definitely make sure they don't charge fees from ATMs that aren't your banks.
