What stage of dove field prep are you in?

Our millet is super thick this year. First year to have any jap mixed in. Interested to see how that works.
Plan to cut it this week, toss it a bazillion times, and bale it.
Should give the birds a couple weeks or less to find it and get fat.

No teal.... My field is in Lincoln County, Mississippi. No way to flood it really.

On that note though, two years ago with the tropical storm that came through day of, the creeks and everything were over flooded into my millet field. I jumped about 10 teal out of it. First time I have ever seen ducks other than woodies there.

Is there a way to justify flooding a field of millet under normal farming practices that allows it to be done legally for ducks

I think you can flood anything you want but you cant knock it down first.

I knock it down and hay bale it for doves and cow food. I would think this could get interesting for teal.

I dont think many birds fly over our property to being with. We are a long way from any major flyway

I thought after it was cut using standard ag practices, it was fair game. Just like a rice field. Now, an uncut field is a different story and those are the ones that really suck in the teal. However, you got the whole manipulation thing going with that if you hunt it.

Almost need a law degree to confirm if the field is baited or not.

When you shred and burn...You just bush hog, let it dry for a few days and burn it?
Or do you bush hog and toss it like hay, then burn it

I know dove and duck is very different. I thought for duck it had to be normal farming practices but I could be off base...

I wouldn't cut it all right now. We are still 30 days away and a rain could sprout it all before opening day. I'd cut some/ leave some. But that's just me....

I think you could plant and not cut then flood. But you better not be knocking it down or cutting any of it

Shred it, wait a few days and pass a disc around the edge of the field and burn. I can tell you this, burning helps a TON.

Dove you can do whatever as long as you aren't chunking bait out there. Meaning you can bush hog, bale, disk up, whatever. Duck you have to run a combine thru it or leave it standing.

Im hunting Mississippi. Opening day Sept 1 at 2PM. 24 days. Plus drying time and toss it. Not sure if hay cutter was coming late this week or early next week. My uncle deals with him
