Anyone deer hunt there? We have a camp about 20 minutes from there. I want to go check it out. Is it overhunted? Any areas I need to avoid? How is the deer population? Any info is appreciated.

I've never been, but it was mentioned in a Game And Fish article two years ago:

quote:

The most popular public land deer hunting opportunity in the Southwest Region is the massive 189,000-acre Homochitto NF. Nestled inside its southern boundary are two sizeable WMAs — Sandy Creek and Caston Creek. Despite the intense hunting pressure they receive, this pair of WMAs continues to produce decent hunter success rates.

I hunted at a club nearby in Knoxville, MS as a guest one afternoon that year and there were so many deer even I managed to get one.

You should at least scout the WMA during squirrel season.

We have a camp there.

They have some nice deer, but they get hunted pretty damn hard. Very nocturnal. You can easily go an entire weekend without seeing a deer.

To add to the pressure, a couple years ago, they allowed squirrel dogs on the wma. Those guys cover some ground. I've had more than a couple hunts interrupted by those guys. Not that they knew I was in the area, but still.

But they do have some nice deer. We kill some pretty good ones, but mostly see them on camera.

Been hunting there since 1998, killed some good deer over the years. Have hunted some really big deer and never saw them in the daylight. Tough place but I like the challenge.

Depending on which side of the wma you're on, you may want to check out St. Catherine creek WMA. It's around Natchez and is bow and muzzleload only. You have to walk in and out, even if you kill.

It's been a few years since I've gone, but used to hit the north side quite a bit. WAY less pressure and they have some real nice deer. You just need a way to get them out. Sometimes you can call the wardens and they will give you a hand.
