Satellite Dish Question

I have an extra satellite box at the house. My buddy says I can take that box, find a direct tv dish and we can hook the satellite up at the deer camp. Is it really that simple? Just want to make sure I don't get charged anything else on my bill.

It is that simple. If the camp is really far from your house you may have issues getting local channels. But yes, it is that simple.

Thanks! And to think all this time I could've been watching ESPN at the camp!

Are the dishes identical? If not, you may have to go through the menu to change the dish type.

They look the same. They both have 3 LNE's?? I'll make sure I keep that in mind in case we have issues.

Check Ebay. Lots of dishes for cheap. Really that simple.

It is that simple but if you keep your box at the camp it might get zapped. Happens to ours all the time.

Direct tv as well as Dish requires that the box is activated and paid for...only cost like $9.95mo. to add a receiver...
...pay that and tell them you use that receiver in your motor home or camper...there is nothing that would get you zapped for having the satellite receiver at an alternate location...

If the box is idle for 30 days, they will cut it off and you'll have to call to have it reactivated from what I was told
I had ours at our camp last year and it worked fine but it was a new box so I'll have to reset it this year I guess

Yep it works.I may know someone that did this at their camp.Local channels are iffy depending on where you are.Ebay is your friend.

It takes about 5 min to activate. Not telling them is probably better than telling them.

It may be very simple, or not. There can be incompatibility issues between receivers and dishes. To avoid this, someone at the camp I hunt at bought a dish from his local DirecTV installer and paid him a fee to install it. My buddy told the installer what receiver (not being used at his house) we'd be using so it'd be compatible w/ the dish. Even then, there were some changes that had to be made in the receiver that I prolly wouldn't have been able to do by myself.
ETA: I believe receiver/dish incompatibility issues are increased when dealing w/ HD reception. Is the box/receiver you plan to use HD or non-HD? Although it can be done, I know from past experience it's more complicated to broadcast an HD signal onto a non-HD tv.

So all you need is an extra box and an extra dish?
I guess they'll charge for the verification card thing per month?

Dish is the same way. My mother in law lives in san antonio TX & has dish @ her house. She decided to get a HD box for her living room & rather than swapping boxes she just ordered an extra box. So we went over to visit & she asked me if I wanted to use it for tailgating @ LSU games. That was 4 years ago. To this day the box works just fine @ my house in Lake Charles, deer camp in mississippi, hunting camp in lake arthur & over in BR @ tiger stadium. Only issue is picking up local channels. They are blacked out. Everything else works fine...

I have had an extra Directv HD receiver at my camp for years. You can reactivate a receiver online by signing into to your account and click on refresh services and your good to go. Got the HD dish on ebay and installed it my self. Extra receiver is $6.00 a month.

Is it pretty easy to find the signal? My farm house has a direct tv dish from two years ago that I'm thinking I could hook up to an extra receiver I'm about to buy.

a compass and a bubble level that fits inside the tube the dish mounts to helps...then you can use the elevation and skew to dial it in close...then once your receiver recognizes the dish and has a weak to moderate signal, you can then fine tune it for maximum signal strength...

The guy who installed my parents told them its the best way to get service at your camp. Even had old satellites to sell and an instruction booklet.
