Anyone ever been? I hear its a tiny little reservations only, home cooked family style place down near Galliano?

Curious if its worth the trip

It is a catering operation, not a traditional restaurant. You must reserve in advance for a group, it is never open to walk ins. It's not exactly tiny; it is Ms. Alzina's son's converted welding shop, with a small entryway/bar, and a combination open kitchen/dining room that seats about 25 family style at two long tables. The cooking is done before you arrive, though she and her granddaughters (who she is grooming to take over the business) will chat a bit with you about the food if you ask questions. Very, very downhome, traditional, bayou Lafourche food: think seafood gumbo (thin, very dark), smothered baby limas, rice dressing, jambalaya (brown), smothered okra, etc.

Here's an oral history featuring Ms. Alzina: LINK /

I saw that the smallest reservation they would take is 6. And ill count seating for 25, open 2 days a week as pretty small still.

Ever actually been? is it worth a trip for someone looking to do something a little outside normal?

Yes, I have been several times. It's a popular venue DTB (down the bayou) for small gatherings like rehearsal dinners, anniversary parties, etc. Worth a visit if you always wanted a Cajun grandma to cook you dinner....not avant garde or cutting edge, just very solid, traditional food. No emphasis on decor, presentation, wines/beverages, or any attempts at pretensions or being upscale. Just good, solid bayou cuisine, served by people who truly understand & eat it (not by someone who learned about it in culinary school or from a book).

Dunno, but it's a fixed price per person, and she'll work with you on the menu. I've heard through the grapevine that she only does Wednesdays and Saturdays, so you may have to book FAR in advance.

yea i knew it was only wed/sat and talking potentially a couple months out. i may have to give a call and learn more directly from them. I know i could round up some folks for it as long as its nothing crazy dollarwise.
