Even by the alarmist standards of many product warnings, the labels on the backs of the football helmets are bracingly blunt: “No helmet system can protect you from serious brain and/or neck injuries including paralysis or death. To avoid these risks, do not engage in the sport of football.”

Anyone ever notice that they never interview or talk to equipment managers that actually fit the helmets?

The company, which plans to appeal the decision, was ordered to pay $3.1 million in damages to a 22-year old man who sustained a head injury in 2008 while playing high school football.

Notably, the jury did not find that Riddell’s helmets were defective. It also found that several coaches were negligent for failing to properly address the player’s injury, highlighting the larger role that coaches, athletes and parents play in recognizing and treating concussions and other head trauma.

What. The. frick. what that jury is saying is that it is the responsibility of the helmet manufacturer to inform athletes of the dangers of football? That's horse shite.

So if a basketball player fricks up his ankle playing basketball, should Nike or reebok or Adidas pay them damages because they didnt sufficiently warn the athlete he might turn his ankle playing basketball? What a TERRIBLE precedent to set.

Helmets can leave players with a false sense of security. It's important to correct that error.

It doesn't make a lot of sense to play football. Kudos to the helmet sticker for keeping it real.

Yea that's why they have warning labels, not a bad verdict. 3.1 million is nothing to a company like Riddell, and now they put very clear warning labels as shown earlier in the thread. The analogy of a basketball player and a shoe is flawed bc of the enormous difference in severity and life damaging ability of a head trauma compared to an ankle injury. Also, a shoes primary purpose is not to prevent injury nor is that how they are marketed, helmets have an implied and oftentimes stated intent to provide protection against head trauma
