What do you consider to be a good 1911 around $700-800.

Why do you like it.

Pros/cons

I have never owned a 1911 but I want a .45 and have decide to possibly go the 1911 route.

If I didn't go with a 1911 what other brand/manufacture should I go with a .45.

Good 1911

Could be described in a million different requirements.
For me a good self defense 1911 is going to cost you over a thousand. Lower end 1911s aren't as reliable as some of the polymer framed options. If you are just trying to knock down metal plates then $600 for a Taurus 1911 will fit the bill fine. It will look cool it will be more accurate then you (anyone) and it will function properly 95%+. Do I trust my life to it? No. Would I shoot the piss out of one at the range all day and have a good time doing it? Of course.

I have been seriously considering a 10mm and a .40/.357sig conversion gun but right now I can only afford 2 and I really want a 9mm and a .45

Find a S&W E series. IMO it's the best production 1911 out there for the price. If you want to spend over 1K it'll open up a whole other plethora of 1911s.

As a couple of others have said the 100% American made Ruger is where I would spend my money.

Serious Question: From an Engineering Standpoint- Is it even possible for the 1911 design to be as reliable as a upper tier polymer pistol? HK or Glock will outperform any 1911 in reliability.
Extractor: Advantage Polymer (S&W and Sig modified theirs to improve it)
Feed: Advantage Polymer
Capacity: Advantage Polymer
Trigger Pull: Advantage 1911
Weight: Advantage Polymer
Accuracy: 1911 at the cost of function.
Accuracy: Polymer more accurate than shooter's ability.

My Understanding of 1911s: When manufacturers or Gunsmiths start to tighten up a 1911 for accuracy, the potential for jams, FTF, and malfunctions increase drastically.

What am I missing about the 1911 "outperforming" an HK or a Glock? How it feels in my hand or looks is not "outperforming"?

This is the most dedicated 1911 groupie board not named 1911forum that I know of...People on here know more about John Moses Browning's personal life than they do about their own Grandfathers and certainly Great Grandfathers.....

My .45 list:
HK, Sig P220, Glock 21. For Concealed SA XDs

Don't think you are qualified from an engineering standpoint because most of those points are BS.

Sig P227 is where it's at for non-1911 .45.

Hardly. Your blind love for the 1911 keeps you warm at night, but doesn't negate anything I stated. By the way, What was John Moses Browning's Engineering degree in? And where did he get his degree?

The feed angle of the 1911 has to be so precise that it will fail to feed otherwise. (No Engineering degree necessary.)
The final moment when the bullet leaves the magazine there is an instant that the bullet relies on inertia to "skip" into the barrel. This is a huge design issue. (look for it, this isn't link-a-thon)

The extractor is WEAK compared to modern polymer extractors. This is why Sig and S&W E Series Switched. Sorry to let facts interfere with your argument.

The tolerances on a 1911 to make it a "match grade" pistol greatly reduce its ability to function reliably.

But please, dispute these design issues with opinions.

I own a fullsize USP .45 and a 1911. Your blind stupidity and ignorance of 1911 platforms (as well as others apparently) keeps you and most of your neighbors warm at night. JMB was a genius in his day during a time when raw talent counted for a hell of a lot more than a college degree. Which apparently carried a lot of weight when H&K designed the USP and admittedly borrowed from JMB. I'd love to see your documentation backing up your claim about feed ramp angles because I can look at my HK and tell spent more time on it and I have not noticed one bit of difference in feeding. Your extractor theory is BS too. I don't think you can substantiate that an internal extractor 1911 is less effective or reliable than than external type, 1911 or otherwise. It requires more knowledge to tune the internal extractor (since externals are purely drop-in for the most part) but once done it will drop brass in a small circle you can draw on the floor and do so for thousands of rounds. As for your "tuned" argument, please show a post of someone here disputing that. Pretty sure a match tuned Glock, HK, Sig, SA, Beretta, AR, and many others suffer similar reliability issues. I've never seen a post onthe HK forums stating a modified match USP is more reliable than a factory standard or tactical but I'm sure ifthere is you probably authored it.

To answer the OP, the Ruger SR1911 (full sized or commander) is the best bang for the buck for a quality American 1911. I also love my S&W1911 and you can buy one without a rail for around $800.

And as for the pissing match, nowhere in the OP did he state it was to be dropped from a plane, buried in mud, rinsed off and then fired without cleaning it. He just asked for a 1911.

I can attest that at the range, the 1911 is the king of 45s. No matter what else you shoot, the 1911 will always be the most fun in 45.

I don't carry 1911s for personal defense because they are so damn heavy. If I had run a particular 1911 and was satisfied with the performance, I would not hesitate to trust my life to it.

I just wanted a 1911 because I like the look and feel of them.

If I wanted a gun that I would put through the ringer and still expect it to work then I would get a .45 glock.
