pc shutting off during games

so I went from a 560ti to a 760 couple of weeks ago, no issues.
plugged in a 2nd monitor today and the rig starts powering off in the middle of games then turning right back on.
I'm hesitant to blame the power supply on this although it seems like that. could it be RAM or MOBO?
also am using an old surge protector (like 6 years old) that I started using today. could it be that?
halp

The OS shutting down slow or is it like the power is being cut?

Well let's start with the obvious: what's your Gpu temp while gaming?
Also, remove the surge protector from the equation and plug into the wall to rule that out.

So akin to a power outage, except it's just your pc
What's the temp while gaming? Idle temps mean nothing. Run a game and watch the temps and see what it is right before shutdown

so my pc is still treating my monitor as if its on (I can drag windows to it turned off) but no issues. I wonder if I am sucking too much juice out of this outlet and it was wired poorly.
edit: nvm, just as I hit enter it shut off and won't turn back on. Rip.

Are you having any problems when your 2nd monitor is not plugged in?

What power supply ? Sounds like the GPU could be overwhelming your Power Supply.
That or overheating.

650w cheap knock off brand. Since it won't even turn on I'm going to assume its the supply.

What is the amperage on the 12v rail ?
The 760 needs a minimum 30 amps on the 12v rail

I'm a retard with this stuff so bear with me.
The side of the supply has 12v1 and 12v2... both for 22 amps. I plugged in 2 4pins to the 760. It worked fine under load until I plugged in a 2nd monitor.

so my desktop decided to turn on and I unplugged the 2nd monitor. if it doesnt keep fricking up, is it pretty much proof that the psu needs to go?
its two years old and this apt complex isnt really grounded well (lightning has fried two modems so far)

Buy a new power supply with proper amperage and 6/8 pin PCIe connectors. It will fix everything unless the current one fried something else.
What cheap brand did you go with? Diablotek? Apevia? Coolmax? Logisys?

athenatek or some shite.
I just ran the Heaven benchmark utility with 1 monitor...
82% gpu power consumption, sat around 68c, 69% fan speed all on ultra at 1920x1080
no crash with one monitor.

Too bad that $49 XFX deal is over. Corsairs will be around that price and should be just fine.
Posted on 8/3/13 at 7:25 pm to ILikeLSUToo
so are we pretty sure its the psu?
I just did the benchmark utility again with two monitors and no crash. starting to really wonder

You could at least "borrow" one from a place that's good about returns. Even if it isn't the PSU that's the root of the problems (i'm 99% sure it is), you're putting your components at risk by using it. Did someone recommend that one to you, or did you just look online for a reasonably priced one?
