Just curious. My son is fixing to go to school in a few weeks for this. Says he will be done with the schooling and can get on with Acadian then. Claims they have a realloy good hourly wage and plenty of overtime. Can anyone here shed some light if this is true or not. Just concerned for his ability to pay back the loan for the courses. Thanks.

He will struggle. Why dont you push him into a two year nursing program?

After he gets on tell him to pursue Paramedic and they will pay for that once he is hired. Should get a decent raise also

He did mention about the paramedic option. $11.20 an hour for the 12 hour shifts is what he had said also. Is overtime avaiable though? One thing about my son he has a good work ethic and don't mind working lots of hours.

I'm sure they give plenty of overtime. Explain to him in the next few years he will get burnt out on the ambulance. Maybe after a year or 2 he could apply on a local fire dept and still do first responder. The dept I work for runs ambulance also, not sure if any fire depts down there do though. Acadian from what I've heard is a pretty good ambulance service, most privatized ambulance services are not that great though.

I assume this will come and go though. Someone will looks at the numbers toward end of a quarter or year and cut off the tap.

Would have to do fire academy also. If that is something he would be interested in. Going all the way and getting paramedic is the way to go though. Opens up more doors. Side jobs in ER's as a tech. Also, as he becomes more experienced Life Flight or whatever the air lift service is called in your area is an option and a LOT of Medics wet dream.

Acadian is HUGE and getting bigger. They just bought out a company (Northstar) here in Houston that was a large private ambulance that had some rural 911 calls as well. But you are correct many others are shady. If he interviews with one and their equipment looks 15 years old and the ambulances have 3 different paint jobs, RUN!!!

He will be able to pay his loan. It is a lifestyle and in the beginning he will love it. As he gets older he will realize he is not getting paid shite and will look at other options.

The older Houston FD guys down here do well, and they had good retirements. Guys walking away in their 50's to their old piece of property in the country. They can still catch on with a company or some start their own on top of retirement/pension.

Pensions are a thing of the past though I believe with HFD. Or anywhere else.
