I think it would be awesome if the US produced the same talented athletes as in football and basketball into soccer. Can you imagine a team with Lebron type athletic ability how good they would become.

Given a lifetime of training athletes of that caliber, in soccer, the dominance would be reminiscent of how the US dominates basketball, today.
Sure we would lose every now and then, but we would be the best.

We would be so far behind even with elite athletes. Lebron James is too tall and has too high of a center if balance.

Furthermore, the coaching and tactics involved need to be taught at a young kid's age. We are out of the network of great coaches. We can hire some, but there are no transformational coaches currently in the States. This will change in the future with guys like Pep Guardiola eventually (hopefully) coaching the USMNT.

this rehashed topic has the same foolish posts all the time. It is not about pure athleticism in soccer. Pirlo is slower than you, the average message board poster, yet he is one of the best in the world with his passing and vision.

Allen Iverson in his prime or Chris Paul would just be nasty.

Those kind of athletes would be incredible.

Deion Sanders?

Competition isn't there though. Foreigners are so good because they play elite competition their entire lives.

Right, but Chris Paul and Allen Iverson playing nothing but soccer from thee formative years would wield some impressive midfielders and such.

I highly doubt any pro soccer player is slower than the average message board poster, no matter how slow he is!

Soccer is just as much about body control as basketball and some football positions are. Guys like DWade, John Wall, and guys like Patrick Peterson would be unbelievably good at soccer if they played it their entire lives. If we as a country treated soccer like we do the real sports we would have the coaching at all levels. We would be far and away the best in the world. The only reason we aren't the best in the world at any sport is because we don't care to be.

I think the real question is, what if the great US soccer players played another sport?

A majority of them would never make the pros. A few if them would, an a smaller number would excel.

Assuming a European style youth development system, we'd wreck shop with our available talent pool. Assuming current youth development system, I don't believe much would change. Soccer is more than just athleticism.

If you meant without any training, they would not do very well. We already saw how the Ochocinco experiment failed. He couldn't even keep up in a reserve game of a 2nd tier league much less a top European league.

But the point is that all of the great athletes in this country (with not just raw athleticism) never play soccer.

Millions upon millions of young people play football or basketball or baseball, and never even try soccer.

There is a guy in the United States right now who could have become one of the greatest soccer players in the world, but he doesn't even know it because he never tried to play.
