Couldn't he have done a 3-D Kate Upton that runs instead?

years from now, every home will have a 3D printer and any time we need plates, cups, silverware, etc, etc, we'll just print them

It's going to be crazy

Does any one know what type of polymers are used in 3-D printing? Does it come in pellet form? Powder form?

Yea, it's going to be awesome. Lot's of it will be free but you just know retail outlets will try to find justification for selling you the cad renderings to use.

"Get the plans for this exclusive Mark Jacobs dinnerware set for just $9.99"

They will try and find a way to trademark plans and then people will not only be fighting over entertainment copyrights on the net but this as well.

I may attempt to build my own 3D printer soon once I get other projects out of the way. There are DIY guides and parts out there for just such a thing. I need a bigger one than the $1000 ones you see and I don't want to pay $5K for one the size I want so building it seems like a good option.

Too much material to make it.

Man, 3d printing is unbelievable. So are there different materials you load in the printer to make different items or what?

This looks like it will have major effects on our economy

We hardly manufacture anything really. It won't hurt us like it will China and other Asian countries.

What an example of determination and persistence. I too would like to revisit his progress thru completion.

If anything, it might create a new niche market in CAD design for 3D printers. Think about all the cheap plastic crap you buy thats made in Taiwan. Somebody stateside can convert to CAD, and sell plans for home 3D printer use.

The possibilities for this are endless. We're talking Star Trek stuff. Speaking of which, imagine deep space exploration having access to this tech. Include CAD designs for every part on the ship. Something breaks, print a new one and fix it.

FYI - The manufacturing output of the United States dwarfs that of China and any other country in the world.

Mass scale production will still have a place. My company has one and it cost like 30k. We love it, but maintanence and materials to run it are not cheap.

Let me rephrase...the stuff we manufacture can't be printed on 3D printers...yet.

It's small plastic parts that as of now 3D printing specializes in which are largely currently made overseas that will get replaced by 3D printing.
